## Understanding a Durga murti: what to look for

Durga is depicted more variously than almost any other deity, and the differences are not decorative; each one identifies a specific form with its own meaning. Knowing which form you want is the single most useful thing to settle before commissioning a murti.

### Her vahana changes with the form

The lion is the vahana most people picture, and it is correct for the majority of forms: Sherawali ("she who rides the tiger/lion"), Skandamata, Katyayani. But it is **not** universal, and a murti is not wrong for lacking one:

- **Shailputri**, the first of the Navadurga, is seated on **Nandi the bull**.
- **Chandraghanta** rides a **tiger**, with the bell-shaped crescent moon set in her crown that gives her the name.

If you are commissioning a specific Navadurga form, the vahana follows the form, not the goddess in general.

### Mahishasura Mardini: the victory form

The most widely commissioned form shows Durga slaying the buffalo demon Mahishasura. The demon beneath her feet is canonical iconography, not violence for its own sake. It follows the same convention as Nataraja standing on Apasmara: the deity serene, the ego subdued beneath. In the finest pieces her face stays calm amid the battle, exactly as the Devi Mahatmya describes and as the Pala-period steles carved her.

Three regional idioms of this form are worth knowing apart:

1. **Pala-style stele**: the goddess braced in *pratyalidhasana*, framed by a deeply carved prabhavali arch with attendant figures.
2. **South Indian temple idiom**: standing in *tribhanga* with a tall *kirita-mukuta* crown and deep-cut jewellery.
3. **Bengali ekchala**, the full family tableau on a single arched *chali*: Durga at centre, flanked by Ganesha and [Lakshmi](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/collections/lakshmi-statues) on one side, Saraswati and Kartikeya on the other, each on their own vahana. This is the form carried through Durga Puja pandals.

### On arm count

Durga is canonically eight- or ten-armed, and you will see "Ashtabhuja" used freely online. In practice a hand-carved murti is commissioned as **multi-armed** and the sculptor resolves the exact count to what the stone and the composition will carry gracefully. Insisting on a precise high count tends to produce an awkward piece rather than a devotional one.

## Choosing the stone

Durga murtis here are made to order unless a piece's own page says otherwise, so the stone is your choice. Tilak Mandirwala works in five:

- **Makrana white marble**: the classic warm-white of Rajasthani temple carving, and the traditional choice for a home mandir.
- **Vietnam white marble**: cooler and brighter than Makrana, with a fine even grain that suits crisp detail like a trishul or a prabhavali.
- **Black stone**: dramatic and mirror-polishable; the natural choice for a Pala-style stele or a South Indian temple idiom, where the depth of carving reads best in dark stone.
- **Dholpur pink sandstone**: a soft, matte, warm-pink Rajasthani stone. It weathers well, which makes it the sensible pick for a garden or courtyard installation.
- **Cast marble dust**: marble powder cast into a composite. Lighter and more affordable than solid stone, and it holds fine detail well, so it suits smaller indoor murtis.

A hand-painted **polychrome** finish is also available on white marble (deep red saree, gold-leafed crown, painted features), which is how Sherawali is most often kept in North Indian homes.

## Size and placement

The pieces in this collection run from **18 inches to 5 feet**, and the right size is usually decided by where it will sit rather than by budget:

- **18 to 24 inches**: a home mandir or pooja shelf. This is the most commonly ordered range.
- **30 to 36 inches**: a dedicated pooja room, or a living-room niche where the murti is the focal point.
- **4 to 5 feet**: a temple installation, an entrance, or a garden. At this scale carving depth matters more than surface polish, because the piece is read from several feet away.

### Vastu and direction

Traditional practice places the murti so the worshipper faces **east or north** while praying, which usually means installing Durga against a west or south wall. Keep her in the **north-east** quadrant of the home where the layout allows.

One rule matters more than any other: **a murti should never sit directly on the floor.** Use a chowki, a plinth, or a mandir shelf. Larger garden and temple pieces are supplied on a raised moulded plinth for exactly this reason.

## When people commission a Durga murti

Most orders cluster around **Navratri** and **Durga Puja**, when a household is either installing a murti for the first time or replacing one. Because every piece is carved to order, allow lead time ahead of the festival rather than ordering into it. The nine Navadurga forms are also commissioned individually across a year by families who keep a different form for each night.

Beyond the festivals, a Durga murti is a common **griha pravesh** gift and a traditional installation in a new business premises, where she is invoked as the protective form.

## Caring for a marble murti

- Dust with a **dry, soft cloth**. Marble is porous and does not need, or want, regular washing.
- Avoid acidic cleaners entirely. Lemon, vinegar and most bathroom products will etch a polished surface permanently.
- Wipe spills from kumkum, oil and ghee promptly; left to sit, they stain.
- For an outdoor piece in sandstone, an occasional rinse with plain water is enough. Do not pressure-wash carved detail.
- Hand-painted polychrome pieces should only ever be dusted dry.

## Commissioning yours

Murtis in this collection are **made to order** unless a piece's own page says otherwise, carved for you by the master sculptors Tilak Mandirwala has worked with in Jaipur's Khajane Walon Ka Rasta for years. Choose the form, the stone, the size and the finish, and we will share a quotation and a timeline before anything begins.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does a custom Durga marble statue take to make?

Two answers, and Navratri dates make the difference worth checking. A Durga murti may already be carved and sitting with the sculptors we work with, in which case there is no carving wait and we send photographs of the actual murti. A commission runs **8 to 12 weeks**, depending on stone, size and detail. Multi-armed forms and the Bengali ekchala group (Durga with Ganesha, Lakshmi, Saraswati and Kartikeya on one frame) take longer, because every figure and weapon is carved individually. We share progress photos throughout.

### What size Durga statue should I choose for my home?

For a **pooja room or shelf**, 18 to 24 inches works well. For a **living-room mandir**, 24 to 36 inches gives appropriate weight. For a **temple or community installation**, 48 to 60 inches makes a commanding centrepiece. Share your space photo on WhatsApp and we'll suggest a size that fits your room.

### Which stone is best for a Durga murti?

**White marble** (Makrana or Vietnam) is the most popular for home shrines and shows the weapon and ornament detailing beautifully. **Black stone** is the historically authentic medium for eastern-Indian and South Indian temple forms. **Dholpur pink sandstone** is warm-toned and weather-ready for gardens and courtyards, and **cast marble dust** suits smaller, more affordable altar pieces. Tell us your preference on WhatsApp before we start so we source it correctly.

### Can you make Mahishasura Mardini, or the Bengali Durga Puja group?

Yes. We craft the **Mahishasura Mardini** form with the demon subdued at her base and the lion at her side, and the **Bengali ekchala** tableau with Durga flanked by her four children on a single arched chali. Both are complex compositions; pricing scales with the number of figures and detail. Share your reference on WhatsApp for a quote.

### Do you make the individual Navadurga forms for Navratri?

Yes. The nine Navratri forms are carved individually: **Shailputri** on her bull, **Chandraghanta** on her tiger, **Skandamata** with the infant Kartikeya, **Katyayani**, and the rest. Many buyers commission them as a set over time, or start with the form tied to their family tradition. Ask on WhatsApp and we'll advise.

### Can the statue be hand-painted in traditional colours?

Yes, we offer a **hand-painted polychrome** finish with a deep red saree, gold-leafed crown and jewelled ornaments, alongside the natural stone finish. Painted murtis are especially popular for **Navratri and Durga Puja** installations. Share a reference and we'll match the palette.

### Is this suitable as an NRI gift? Can you ship internationally?

Yes. Durga murtis are widely requested by the **Bengali and North Indian diaspora**, especially across the **USA, UK, and Canada**. We ship worldwide with experienced freight partners, multi-layer crating, and full insurance. We share an exact freight quote after the murti is finalised so there are no surprises at delivery.
