Settling three things (the form, the direction of the trunk, and the stone) takes you most of the way to a finished commission. ### Which way the trunk curls This is the first question serious buyers ask, and it is worth understanding rather than guessing. - A trunk curled to the **left** (*Vamamukhi*) is the common household choice. It is considered gentler and more forgiving of ritual lapses, which is why the overwhelming majority of home murtis are carved this way. - A trunk curled to the **right** (*Dakshinamukhi*, or *Siddhi Vinayaka*) is regarded as more potent and more demanding. It is traditionally installed in temples and observed with stricter ritual discipline. - A **straight** trunk is rare and reserved for specific tantric contexts. Designs in this collection are made to order unless a piece's own page says otherwise, so the trunk is specified before carving begins rather than chosen off a shelf. ### The forms carved in this collection The pieces here run from the everyday to the genuinely uncommon: - **Seated blessing (lalitasana)** with abhaya mudra and a modak: the default home-mandir form, and the most ordered. - **Bal Ganesh**, the child form: seated cradling a laddu, or crawling after one. A favourite for children's rooms and naming ceremonies. - **Nritya Ganesh**, dancing in tribhanga. This is the most kinetic form, and the one that shows a sculptor's skill most plainly. - **Panchmukhi**, five-faced and multi-armed, seated. - **Riddhi-Siddhi Ganesh**, flanked by his two consorts, prosperity and attainment. - **Mayuresha**, seated on the peacock vahana, an avatar tied to the Morgaon Ashtavinayak temple. - **Ekadanta**, the scribe-scholar with palm-leaf manuscript and stylus, referencing his transcription of the Mahabharata. - **Sangeet Ganesh**, seated playing the veena. - **Reclining Ganesh**, relaxed on a cushioned couch with the mushak at the base. - **Standing (samabhanga)**, four-armed in blessing. Two details recur across almost all of them and are worth checking on any murti you buy: the **mushak** (mouse) at the base, his vahana, and the **modak** in hand. A Ganesh without either reads as incomplete to anyone who knows the iconography. ### On arm count You will see *Ashtabhuja* and *Dashabhuja* used freely online. In practice a hand-carved murti is commissioned as **multi-armed**, and the sculptor resolves the exact count to what the composition and the stone will carry gracefully. Insisting on a precise high number tends to produce an awkward piece rather than a devotional one. Tilak Mandirwala works in five: - **Makrana white marble**: the warm white of Rajasthani temple carving, and the traditional choice for a home mandir. - **Vietnam white marble**: cooler and brighter than Makrana, with a fine even grain that holds crisp detail like a prabhavali torana or fine jewellery work. - **Black stone**: dramatic and mirror-polishable. It suits a contemporary interior and makes gold-leaf detailing read strongly. - **Dholpur pink sandstone**: a soft, warm-pink Rajasthani stone with a matte surface. It weathers well, which makes it the sensible pick for a courtyard or a semi-open pooja space. - **Cast marble dust**: marble powder cast into a composite. Lighter and more affordable than solid stone, and it holds fine detail, so it suits smaller indoor murtis. Finishes run from **matte (honed)** through **soft satin polish** to a full **mirror polish**. Matte flatters carving depth on a sandstone or black piece; mirror polish suits white marble in a lit mandir. ## Size and placement The pieces in this collection run from **12 inches to 3 feet**, and the right size is usually decided by where it will sit: - **12 to 18 inches**: a home mandir shelf or a desk. The most commonly ordered range. - **20 to 24 inches**: a dedicated pooja room, or an entrance console where the murti greets guests. - **30 to 36 inches**: a living-room focal point, a lobby, or a small temple installation. ### Vastu and direction Ganesha is traditionally installed so the worshipper faces **east or north**, which usually means placing him against a west or south wall. He is also the classic **entrance** deity, placed facing into the home to welcome, and by long convention a second image faces outward at the threshold. One rule outranks the rest: **a murti should never sit directly on the floor.** Use a chowki, a plinth, or a mandir shelf. ## When people commission one Orders cluster hard around **Ganesh Chaturthi**, and because every piece is carved to order you should allow lead time ahead of the festival rather than ordering into it. Beyond that, a Ganesh murti is the default **griha pravesh** gift. He is the remover of obstacles and the deity invoked at the start of anything new, which is also why he is the most common installation in a new shop or office. ## Caring for the murti - Dust with a **dry, soft cloth**. Marble is porous and neither needs nor wants regular washing. - Avoid acidic cleaners entirely, since lemon, vinegar and most bathroom products permanently etch a polished surface. - Wipe kumkum, oil and ghee promptly. Left to sit, they stain, and sindoor in particular is difficult to lift from white marble. - For a sandstone piece kept outdoors, an occasional rinse with plain water is enough.
