## Jalaram Bapa murtis for the ghar mandir

Jalaram Bapa of Virpur is kept in the home differently from most murtis. Families who
have grown up saying *Jai Jalaram* usually want him where the household actually passes
(the pooja shelf by the kitchen, the niche near the entrance), because the sant is
remembered for feeding whoever arrived, not for a distant darshan. That shapes what
people ask us for: a murti that reads correctly from three feet away, in a size that
fits a real shelf, and a face that matches the portrait hanging in their parents' house.

This collection is built for that. Every piece is carved to order by the master
sculptors we work with, and the pieces below are the starting points people commission
from most often: a Lohana family in Rajkot, a Gujarati household in Leicester or
Nairobi, a Jalaram mandir trust ordering at temple scale.

## The forms carved here

The standing forms are the ones most households begin with. The
[24in standing ashirwad murti](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/makrana-white-marble-jalaram-bapa-standing-ashirwad-24in)
is the commonest ask: right hand raised palm-out, jholi across the shoulder, danda in
the left hand. A [12in namaskar murti](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/makrana-white-marble-jalaram-bapa-namaskar-standing-12in)
suits a shelf where the murti sits among other deities rather than alone, and the
[8in compact murti](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/marble-dust-composite-jalaram-bapa-compact-standing-8in)
is the size that travels in hand luggage.

Seated forms carry a different mood. The
[18in seated blessing murti on a low chowki](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/makrana-white-marble-jalaram-bapa-seated-blessing-chowki-18in)
is domestic and close; the
[21in singhasan darshan murti in black granite](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/black-granite-jalaram-bapa-seated-singhasan-darshan-21in)
is formal, made for a mandir that already has a carved throne in its vocabulary.

Two pieces answer requests that come up again and again. The
[Jalaram Bapa and Virbai Ma pair](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/makrana-white-marble-jalaram-bapa-virbai-ma-pair-24in)
places the two figures on a shared plinth, because in Virpur they are honoured together
and a great many families will not take one without the other. The
[16in murti with the Sadavrat dog](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/makrana-white-marble-jalaram-bapa-with-sadavrat-dog-16in)
brings in the animal from the stories of the annakshetra.

For larger installations there is the
[36in murti on a lotus plinth](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/makrana-white-marble-jalaram-bapa-ashirwad-lotus-plinth-36in)
and the [48in temple-scale murti](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/makrana-white-marble-jalaram-bapa-temple-scale-danda-48in).
In black granite, the [30in standing murti](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/black-granite-jalaram-bapa-standing-jholi-danda-30in)
and the [15in folded-hands murti with a long tulsi mala](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/black-granite-jalaram-bapa-folded-hands-tulsi-mala-15in)
suit rooms where a white murti would disappear against a pale wall. The
[hand-painted 12in murti](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/marble-dust-composite-jalaram-bapa-hand-painted-standing-12in)
follows the coloured Gujarati convention: white turban, ochre kediyu, saffron jholi.

## The jholi and the danda

Ask a carver to leave them out and the piece stops being Jalaram Bapa. The cloth bag and
the wooden staff are not props; they are the Sadavrat, the free kitchen at Virpur that
has run without interruption since his lifetime, and devotees read them the way they
read a trishul on Shiva. Tradition holds that both were given to him by a visitor who
never returned for them, and they are still kept at Virpur.

So on every murti here the jholi is carved as real cloth with weight in it, slung at the
shoulder or held forward, and the danda is a plain turned staff, never ornamented. On
the seated pieces they rest at his side rather than vanishing. If you are commissioning
a variation, this is the one detail worth being fussy about: a Jalaram Bapa murti without
the jholi will look wrong to the person who prays to it, even if they cannot immediately
say why.

## Telling a Jalaram Bapa murti from a Sai Baba murti

This is the most common mix-up we are asked to correct, and it is worth a paragraph
because online listings get it wrong constantly. Both are bearded sants in pale cloth,
and at thumbnail size they blur, but four details separate them, and any one of them
settles it.

Jalaram Bapa wears a **wound turban**; Sai Baba wears a cloth **knotted over the left
shoulder**. Jalaram Bapa's beard is **long and full to the chest**; Sai Baba's is short.
Jalaram Bapa wears a Kathiawadi **kediyu over a dhoti**, upper body covered; Sai Baba
wears a **kafni robe**. And Jalaram Bapa carries the **jholi and danda**, where Sai Baba
is shown with the satka or the padukas. Check the turban first: it is the fastest tell
and it is visible in any photograph.

## Choosing the stone

Makrana white marble is the default here and the reason is the beard. Makrana takes a
fine undercut and holds a sharp edge, so the strands read as strands rather than as one
carved mass, and its faint warmth keeps an elderly face from looking cold. Most of the
pieces above are Makrana.

Black granite does something different: it flattens the surface detail and pushes the
silhouette forward, which is why the seated singhasan and the 30in standing murti work in
it. It is the right choice against a light wall, or in a room with strong daylight where
white marble bleaches out. Cast marble dust suits the small sizes, since it holds detail well
at 8in and 12in, weighs less for shipping, and is the only one of the three that takes
hand-painted polychrome properly. Vietnam white marble and Dholpur pink sandstone are in
production for other subjects and can be quoted if you want one.

## Sizing it for your space

The pieces here run from 8in to 48in. For a shelf inside an existing ghar mandir, 8in to
15in is usually right. The 12in murtis weigh 3 to 5 kg and sit on a standard shelf
without reinforcing it. For a murti that stands on its own in a pooja room, 16in to 24in
is the band most homes settle on.

Weight matters more than height once you pass 20in, and black granite is roughly twice
the weight of marble for the same piece: the 21in seated singhasan murti is 32 kg and the
30in standing murti is 62 kg, so both want a stone or masonry base rather than a wooden
console. At 36in and 48in you are into temple territory, and we will ask about floor
access and doorway widths before quoting.

## Caring for your murti

Dry dusting with a soft cloth is all a marble or granite murti needs. Avoid acidic
cleaners entirely: lemon, vinegar and most bathroom sprays will etch a polished surface
permanently. Wipe up oil and kumkum promptly rather than letting them sit, especially on
satin-finished Makrana, which is slightly more open than a mirror polish. The
hand-painted piece takes a dry cloth only.

## Make it yours

Everything above is a starting point, not a catalogue you have to choose from. Most
people who write to us want something close to one of these with a change: the seated
form at 30in instead of 21in, the standing murti in black granite, Virbai Ma added to a
piece that does not have her.

Ask us before assuming a date is impossible. Some pieces already exist, carved and
finished, and we will ask the sculptors we work with and send you photographs of the
actual murti. There is no carving wait on those, and we will quote transit for that
specific piece. A fresh commission takes eight to twelve weeks depending on size and the
depth of carving. Tell us the date you are working towards and we will tell you honestly
which of the two you are looking at.

And if you have a Jalaram Bapa murti in mind that is nothing like anything here (a form
from your family mandir, a photograph you have kept), bring it. That is the more
interesting conversation, and it is how a good many of these pieces started.
