## Laddu Gopal murtis, carved to order

Laddu Gopal is Krishna as a small child: the one who steals butter, crawls across the floor of a Gokul house and is looked after rather than only worshipped. Families call him Bal Gopal, Makhan Chor, Thakurji or simply Laddu Gopal, and the name usually depends on where the household is from rather than on any difference in the murti itself.

This collection gathers every infant-Krishna form we make, from a six-inch piece for a shelf up to an eighteen-inch jhula with its own carved pavilion. Each one is made to order: you pick the form, the stone and the height, and it is carved for you by the master sculptors we work with in Rajasthan.

## The child, not the flute player

Worth settling before anything else, because the two are different products and people often arrive looking for one and browsing the other.

The grown Krishna stands in tribhanga with a flute at his lips, often with Radha beside him. That Krishna belongs in our [Krishna statues](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/collections/krishna-statues) and [Radha Krishna](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/collections/radha-krishna-statues) collections, and there is no flute anywhere on this page. An infant Krishna holding a flute is simply the wrong murti.

What identifies Laddu Gopal instead is the butter. A ball of makhan in the raised hand, an ornate pot at his side or under his fingers, a peacock feather in the crown, and a child's proportions: a large head, soft rounded limbs, a body that reads as an infant rather than a small adult. If you are choosing between the two, the question is usually whether you want a murti to dress and serve daily, or a figure for the mandir.

## The forms carved here

Fourteen pieces, and they divide into a few clear groups.

**Seated, with the butter pot.** The classic darshan. The [Makrana white nine-inch with butter pot](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/makrana-white-marble-laddu-gopal-butter-pot-9in) is the plainest statement of it; the [gold-leaf shringar on a singhasan](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/makrana-white-marble-laddu-gopal-gold-leaf-singhasan-12in) is the same form dressed for a festival, with the crown and jewellery picked out in gold leaf.

**Crawling: the Makhan Chor.** Caught mid-crawl with the stolen butter. Available in [Vietnam white at twelve inches](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/vietnam-white-marble-crawling-makhan-chor-12in) and in [black stone at eighteen](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/black-marble-bal-gopal-crawling-makhan-chor-18in), where the mirror polish gives the piece a very different weight.

**Standing.** The [Dholpur pink sandstone fifteen-inch](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/dholpur-pink-sandstone-standing-bal-krishna-butter-pot-15in) carries the pot against his hip. The [black stone Dahi Handi](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/black-granite-dahi-handi-bal-krishna-18in) has him stretched up on his toes reaching for a hanging matki. It is the Gokulashtami form, carved mid-reach.

**The jhula.** The [eighteen-inch pavilion](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/makrana-white-marble-bal-gopal-jhula-pavilion-18in) is a full scene rather than a single figure: a pillared mandapa, a cradle hung on carved chains, the infant asleep inside and Yashoda standing beside with a hand on the chain. The [twelve-inch marble dust version](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/marble-dust-compact-bal-gopal-jhula-12in) keeps the cradle and drops the pavilion, for a shelf that cannot take the full piece.

**With another figure.** [Yashoda holding the infant](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/makrana-white-marble-yashoda-with-infant-krishna-18in) is the mother-and-child murti, and [Bal Gopal with a calf](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/makrana-white-marble-bal-gopal-with-calf-15in) puts Gokul into a single piece.

**Named forms.** [Santan Gopal on a lotus chowki](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/vietnam-white-marble-santan-gopal-lotus-chowki-12in) is the form couples keep when praying for a child, and the [hand-painted Navaneeta Krishna](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/hand-painted-marble-dust-navaneeta-krishna-9in) is the butter-holding child in traditional colour rather than plain stone.

## A murti you dress

This is the part that makes Laddu Gopal unlike anything else we make, and it is worth understanding before you choose a size.

He is not only installed and worshipped. He is dressed in poshak that changes with the season, given a bath, offered bhog, put to sleep at night. Many households keep several sets of clothes and a small jhula for him. That daily relationship is the whole point of keeping a Laddu Gopal rather than a larger murti.

It has a practical consequence for the carving. Ready-made poshak is sold against a numbered size system, and those numbers are calibrated for the small brass and composite murtis that dominate that trade, nowhere near the proportions of a carved stone piece. So a stone Laddu Gopal is usually dressed in cloth cut for him, not bought off a rack. If you intend to dress your murti, tell us when you order and the sculptor will keep the shoulders and lap open enough to take fabric, rather than carving ornaments tight against the body.

If you would rather not dress him at all, the opposite is true and the carved shringar becomes the point, which is what the gold-leaf and hand-painted pieces are for.

## Choosing the stone

Five stones, and for this subject they genuinely look different rather than being variations on white.

**Makrana white marble** is the traditional choice and the warmest of the whites; on a child's face it keeps the softness in the cheeks. **Vietnam white marble** is cooler and cleaner, closer to porcelain, and it suits the smaller pieces where you want the piece to read bright on a crowded shelf. **Dholpur pink sandstone** is the one that surprises people. It is a warm pale blush stone, matte rather than polished, and the historically right material for Braj: the Govind Dev Ji and Madan Mohan murtis of Vrindavan are carved in it. **Black stone** takes a mirror polish that makes the ornaments read as sharp highlights, and it is the strongest contrast against a light mandir. **Cast marble dust** is the lightest and most affordable, and it takes hand-painting well.

## Where it sits, and why this line starts at six inches

Most of our collections run from eighteen inches upward. This one runs the other way, because a Laddu Gopal usually lives on a pooja shelf inside an existing mandir rather than standing on the floor.

The six-inch and nine-inch pieces are for exactly that: a shelf inside a home mandir, or a small altar in a flat where there is no room for anything larger. Twelve inches is the most-ordered height here and works as the central murti of a modest mandir. Fifteen and eighteen inches become the presiding piece. The jhula and the Yashoda both need that height for the second element to read properly, and neither works scaled down much below it.

Six inches is where we stop, and it is worth being straightforward about why. Below that you are into the mass-produced brass and resin segment, which is a real market with real products in it, but it is not made-to-order stone carving, and a hand-carved piece at three inches would cost more than it deserves to. If you want something smaller than six inches, we would rather tell you that than sell it.

For placement, the north-east corner is the usual choice, with the murti raised to roughly chest height and facing east or west.

## Timing it for Janmashtami

Janmashtami falls on **4 September 2026**, and it is when most Laddu Gopal murtis are brought home: a new murti installed on his own birthday, often with a jhula for the midnight hour.

Made-to-order carving takes time, and the plainer seated pieces move faster than the jhula and the multi-figure work. If you want a piece in the house for the festival, start the conversation several weeks ahead rather than in the final fortnight. Tell us the date when you write and we will be honest with you about whether it is achievable, and say so plainly if it is not.

## Caring for it

Very little. Dust with a dry or barely damp soft cloth. Keep household acids away from the stone. Lemon, vinegar, descaling liquids and most bathroom cleaners will etch marble, and no polish will bring the surface back afterwards.

The matte Dholpur pink pieces hide handling marks better than the mirror-polished black stone, which shows fingerprints the way any gloss surface does. Hand-painted and gold-leaf pieces want a dry cloth only, and a light touch around the raised detail. Kumkum, oil and ghee marks lift most easily if they are dealt with the same day.

## Make it yours

Everything on this page is a starting point rather than a fixed catalogue. If a form here is right but you want it in a different stone, at a different height, with or without the carved shringar, that is an ordinary request and not a special one.

And if what you have in mind is not on this page at all (a form from your family's tradition, a murti you have seen somewhere and want carved, a jhula built to fit a mandir you already own), send us a photograph and describe it. We will design it with you, brief the sculptor, quote you honestly, and follow the piece through to your door.
