## Choosing a Lakshmi murti

Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, and the forms she is carved in are not decorative variations. Each addresses a different aspect of prosperity. Knowing which one you want is the most useful thing to settle before commissioning.

### The forms carved in this collection

- **Gaja Lakshmi**: seated on a lotus, flanked by two elephants pouring water over her in *abhisheka*. The most auspicious and most ordered form, and the classic choice for a business or a new home. The elephants signify royal power and rainfall, which is to say abundance that actually arrives.
- **Dhan Lakshmi**, gold coins streaming from the lower hand. The most literal wealth form, and the usual Diwali installation for a shop or an office.
- **Standing Mahalakshmi**: four-armed on a lotus, in abhaya-varada mudra, one hand granting fearlessness, one granting boons.
- **Rajlakshmi**, seated regally on an ornate lotus throne. The sovereign form: regal, and carved to command a room.
- **Ashtabhuja Mahalakshmi**, eight-armed, standing on a lotus.
- **Kamala**, standing, holding two lotuses. The purest and quietest of the forms.
- **Seated padmasana on a lotus**: the straightforward home-mandir form.
- **Standing with the owl vahana (ulooka)** at the base.

Certain attributes should be present on any Lakshmi worth buying: she stands or sits on a **lotus**, holds **lotus blooms**, and has at least one hand in the coin-pouring **varada** gesture. Her canonical attire is a **red or pink sari** with heavy gold ornamentation, which is why she is one of the deities most often finished in hand-painted polychrome rather than left as bare stone.

If you are buying for Diwali, the conventional pairing is Lakshmi with Ganesh rather than Lakshmi alone. See the [Lakshmi Ganesh pair collection](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/collections/lakshmi-ganesh-pair), where the two are composed together on a shared base.

## Choosing the stone

Every murti is made to order. Tilak Mandirwala works in five stones:

- **Makrana white marble**: warm, dense temple white. The traditional choice, and the standard base for hand-painted work.
- **Vietnam white marble**: cooler and brighter, with a fine even grain that holds the fine detail of ornaments, a coin-flow and elephant trunks crisply. Lakshmi is a heavily ornamented deity, so grain quality matters more here than on a plain seated figure.
- **Black stone**: mirror-polishable and dramatic; gold-leaf detailing reads powerfully against it.
- **Dholpur pink sandstone**: warm, matte, weathers well. For a courtyard shrine or a semi-open space.
- **Cast marble dust**: lighter and more affordable, holds fine detail, good for smaller altar pieces.

## Size and placement

The pieces here run from **18 inches to 5 feet**:

- **18 to 24 inches**: a home mandir or a shop counter shrine. The most commonly ordered range.
- **30 to 36 inches**: a dedicated pooja room, a reception, or an office entrance.
- **4 to 5 feet**: a temple installation, a lobby, or a hall. At this scale carving depth carries the piece more than surface polish.

### Vastu and direction

Lakshmi has clearer placement conventions than most deities, and they are worth following:

- Install so the worshipper faces **east or north**. The **north** direction is specifically associated with wealth, and a north-facing shrine is the traditional choice for her.
- The **north-east** quadrant of the home or business is the standard location.
- She is conventionally installed **seated** rather than standing for a home, on the reasoning that a seated goddess stays. Standing forms are more common in temples and commercial premises.
- Keep her clear of the kitchen, a bathroom wall, or under a staircase.
- **Never directly on the floor.** Use a chowki, plinth or mandir shelf.

## When people commission one

**Diwali** dominates, and specifically **Lakshmi Puja** on the main night. This is when most Lakshmi murtis are commissioned. A commissioned murti typically takes four to six weeks to carve, so a Diwali murti needs to be ordered well ahead; some forms already exist and typically reach you in about two weeks, depending on where you are. If the Lakshmi is a gift, see our [marble Diwali gifts](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/collections/marble-diwali-gifts) collection. **Akshaya Tritiya** and **Varalakshmi Vratam** bring smaller waves.

Beyond the festivals, a Lakshmi murti is the standard installation for a **new business**, a shop opening or an office, and a common **griha pravesh** gift.

## Caring for the murti

- Dust with a **dry, soft cloth**. Marble is porous and does not need washing.
- No acidic cleaners: lemon, vinegar and bathroom products permanently etch polished stone.
- Wipe ghee, oil, kumkum and turmeric promptly. Turmeric in particular stains white marble quickly and is commonly offered to her.
- Hand-painted polychrome pieces should only ever be dusted dry.

## Commissioning yours

Every murti in this collection is **made to order**, carved for you by the master sculptors and artist families Tilak Mandirwala has worked with in Jaipur for years. Tell us the form, the stone, the size and whether you want it painted; we work through the design with you, brief the sculptor, share progress photographs as the piece takes shape, and deliver it to your door. A quotation and a timeline come before anything begins.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does a custom Lakshmi marble statue take to make?

Ask early, especially around Diwali. A Lakshmi murti in a common size may already be carved and waiting with the sculptors we work with, and a ready piece carries no carving wait. We send photographs of the actual murti so you are choosing the real thing. A commission takes **8 to 12 weeks**, depending on stone, size and detail. A Gaja Lakshmi with flanking elephants, or a fully ornamented four-armed form, takes longer than a simple seated idol. We share progress photos at each milestone.

### Which form of Lakshmi can you carve?

Every popular form is carved to order: **Gaja Lakshmi** (seated on a lotus, flanked by two elephants), **standing Lakshmi** showering coins, the classic **seated four-armed Lakshmi** on a lotus, and **Ashta Lakshmi** panels for temples. The goddess always keeps her canonical attire: a red or pink sari, four arms holding lotus blooms and a coin-pouring varada hand. Share a reference image on WhatsApp and we adapt the form, ornaments, and expression to your vision.

### What size Lakshmi statue should I choose?

For a **home pooja room or shelf**, 9 to 15 inches works well. For a **living-room or entrance centrepiece**, 18 to 30 inches. For a **shop, showroom, or business reception**, 2 to 3 ft makes a strong presence, and temple installs go larger still. Send a photo of the spot on WhatsApp and we’ll suggest a height that sits in proportion. Lakshmi is traditionally placed at eye level or above, never at floor level.

### Can you deliver in time for Diwali or a shop opening?

Usually yes, but tell us the date before anything else. If a suitable Lakshmi is already carved and sitting with the artist families we work with, there is no carving wait and the date is far easier to meet. We send photographs of the actual murti straight away. If it has to be carved for you, work back from the date: Diwali and Dhanteras are our busiest weeks, so a commission needs its full **8 to 12 weeks** comfortably clear. For business openings and griha pravesh, give us the muhurat date and we build the schedule around it, confirming a firm window in writing.

### Which marble can I choose? Do you make these in stones other than white?

You can choose from several stones: **Makrana white marble** (the classic warm-white, and the same stone used in the Taj Mahal), **Vietnam white marble** (cooler and brighter, with a fine even grain), **black stone**, **Dholpur pink sandstone**, and **cast marble dust** for budget pieces. Most Lakshmi idols are commissioned in **Makrana white** because it suits pooja-room and temple settings, but we craft in any stone you specify. Tell us your preference on WhatsApp before we start so we can source the right stone.

### Do you ship a Lakshmi statue internationally?

Yes, we ship worldwide. Lakshmi idols are a common **NRI and gifting order**, so we pack every piece in multi-layer wooden crating built for long transit. International freight cost depends on **destination, size, and insurance**; shipping to the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia is routine. We share an exact freight quote once the statue’s size and stone are finalised.

### What is the payment process?

We collect a **small advance (10 to 25%)** to begin, which covers stone procurement and artisan time. The **balance is due only after your Lakshmi arrives safely** at your address. You approve final photos before we crate and dispatch, so there are no surprises. For international orders we agree the freight terms in writing upfront.
