## Marble wedding gifts for guests, and who is buying them

A marble wedding gift is almost never bought by the couple. It is bought by a parent working down a
list, an aunt or an uncle who has taken the gifting on, or a planner sourcing for a client, and all
three are solving the same problem. They need to see what is possible before they can decide
anything, and they need to know it can be made in the number they actually require.

That is what this collection is for, and everything on it is sized to be **handed over**. A piece a
guest carries home from a function is a different object from a murti that gets installed in one:
nothing here is taller than sixteen inches, and most of it is under nine. Larger devotional pieces
are a genuine wedding gift too, but they belong to the couple's new home rather than to a guest
list, and they live on the murti and mandir pages instead.

Nothing carries a price, because that depends on the piece, the stone, the carving and how many you
need. Browse this as a set of ideas, send us the ones you like with a count and a date, and we quote
against that.

## Which guests, and what tends to suit each

Most gifting lists are not one gift repeated. They are three or four tiers, and the useful question
is which piece belongs to which tier.

**The sambandhi and immediate family.** The most worked piece on your list: a pietra dura jewellery
box, an inlaid tray, a boxed pooja set. Counts here are small enough that dense parchin kari inlay
is reasonable, and this is the tier where a piece is examined closely rather than glanced at.

**Elders and senior relatives.** Ceremonial rather than decorative reads best: a shagun thali with
its lidded coin vessel, a pooja thali set, a lotus diya holder, a small chowki. Makrana white is the
expected stone here and the expectation is worth meeting.

**The bridal party and close friends.** Personal, keepable objects: a chooda box, attar bottles
with turned brass stoppers, a keepsake box, a photo frame pair. Names or a date can be engraved or
set in brass wire inlay, which matters more at this tier than at any other.

**Colleagues, and corporate or business guests.** Devotional pieces are the wrong register for a
guest who is there in a professional capacity. Black stone desk pieces (a pen stand, a boxed desk
set, a partitioned dry-fruit box) carry no religious content and suit a mixed-faith list.

**Out-of-town and overseas guests.** The constraint is the suitcase, not the shelf. Stay under about
six inches and under a kilo or two: coaster sets, a compact kumkum and haldi pair, a favour box set.
Anything larger is better shipped to their address afterwards than carried.

**The wider guest list, and the people who work the wedding.** The pandit, the helpers, the staff at
the venue. Small, low-relief, repeatable pieces: this is the favour band, and it is the tier where
the choice of form matters most.

## What is in this collection

The pieces fall into three groups, and most lists draw from more than one.

**Ceremony pieces** are tied to a ritual moment: a shagun thali with its coin vessel, an inlaid tray
for the ring exchange and the varmala, a paired kumkum and haldi set with brass lids, a lotus-seat
chowki. These are the smallest pieces made and the easiest to repeat in quantity.

**Keepsake and trousseau pieces** are what a bride is given directly: a lidded chooda box with an
inlaid rosette, a pietra dura jewellery box, a slim set of attar bottles, a fluted keepsake box
topped with a walnut knob, an inlaid photo frame pair.

**Table and household pieces** are the ones that stay in use: lotus-petal urli bowls, pierced jali
tealight lanterns, serving trays with cast brass handles, coaster sets with floral inlay, a
partitioned dry-fruit box, and the chakla belan and khalbatta that traditionally go into a new
kitchen.

One small murti sits alongside them: a six-inch Laddu Gopal, which is the one devotional form that
is genuinely handed over rather than installed.

## Twenty guests, or three hundred

The single question that changes everything on this page is how many.

**One piece, or a handful.** This is where the carving can be genuinely elaborate: dense inlay
across a tray face, or a deep undercut jali. A single piece absorbs a week of one sculptor's attention
without the cost becoming strange, so if you are choosing one gift, choose the most worked version
of it.

**Twenty to fifty.** The practical band for close family, the sambandhi exchange and senior guests.
The form stays the same across the set but the inlay simplifies: a border rather than a field, a
wire line rather than a rosette. Pieces at this count are still individually finished.

**A hundred and upward.** At favour counts the piece has to be simple enough to repeat without
drifting, which means small, low-relief and geometric: coasters, diyas, a compact kumkum vessel, a
small chowki set. We will say plainly if a piece you have picked does not repeat well at your number,
and suggest one that does. That conversation is more useful than a discount.

A hundred identical pieces is a different kind of work from one exceptional piece, and pretending
otherwise is how gifting orders go wrong.

The same tiers work at Diwali, when one family or one company sends a gift to many people; that
list is the [marble Diwali gifts](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/collections/marble-diwali-gifts) collection.

## What the presentation box does

Almost every piece here can be delivered in a fitted rigid box, with a die-cut insert cut to the shape of
the piece, the lid separate, the whole thing ready to hand over without rewrapping.

This matters more than it sounds. A marble object handed over loose reads as an object; the same
object seated in a lined recess reads as a gift, and at guest-facing counts that difference is most
of the effect you are paying for. It also solves a real logistical problem: stone chips at the edges,
and a fitted insert is what stops fifty pieces arriving with damage at three of them.

The boxed sets shown here are photographed open, with the lid propped behind, so you can see the
insert and the way the pieces sit. Tell us if you want the box in a particular colour, or a card or
name slip seated inside it.

## Choosing the stone

Five stones are in production, and for gifting the choice is mostly about what the piece has to say.
**Makrana white marble** is the default for anything auspicious or ceremonial: the warm temple white
quarried in Nagaur district, which takes fine inlay without chipping. **Vietnam white marble** is
cooler and more even, which suits clean modern forms and flat faces where a vein would distract.
**Black stone** takes a mirror polish and reads contemporary rather than devotional, so it carries
the desk pieces, the dry-fruit boxes and the frames. **Dholpur pink sandstone** is warm, matte and
unmistakably Rajasthani. **Cast marble dust** is the sensible answer at high counts and small sizes,
where solid stone would make the unit cost unreasonable.

## Size, weight and what actually travels

The pieces run from a four-inch kumkum vessel to a sixteen-inch inlaid tray, and for a guest gift the
constraint is the journey rather than the shelf.

Under about six inches is what a guest carries home in a hand. That is the favour band, and where the
hundred-plus counts sit. Six to twelve inches is carried out to a car, which covers most of the boxed
sets, the keepsake boxes and the ceremony pieces. Twelve to sixteen inches (the trays, the urlis,
the larger lanterns) is a gift for a specific person rather than a general guest, because stone is
dense and a shallow twelve-inch urli is heavier than people expect.

That ceiling is deliberate. Anything above it stops being something you hand across at a function,
which is why you will not find a two-foot statue on this page even though we make plenty of them.

If you are shipping to guests rather than handing pieces over at the function, say so early. It
changes which pieces make sense far more than it changes the price.

## Ready now, or made for you

There are two ways a piece reaches you, and on a page with a wedding date attached to it the first
one matters most.

Some pieces **already exist**: either stock we hold, or work already carved by the sculptors and
artist families we work with. Tell us the form and the size and we ask them directly, then send you
photographs of the actual piece rather than a render. When one of those is right there is **no
carving wait at all**, which is usually what makes a near date reachable. We cannot publish a fixed
timing for it, because it depends entirely on the piece and where it is going.

Everything else is **commissioned**. Small decorative pieces take **four to eight weeks**, depending
on how much carving and inlay is in them; a murti is **eight to twelve weeks**. Tell us your date
before you commit to a piece; we would rather point you at something already carved than take an
order we cannot land in time.

## Caring for a marble piece

Dry dusting is almost all of it, with a barely damp cloth for anything that has been handled. Keep
acids away: lemon, vinegar, descaler and most bathroom cleaners etch a polished surface permanently,
and that is the one mistake that cannot be undone. Brass fittings dull over time, which most people
prefer; a light metal polish on the brass alone brings them back. For anything with inlay, avoid
soaking, since prolonged water can lift the adhesive under the stones.

## Make it yours

Everything here is a starting point rather than a fixed catalogue. If you like a piece but want it in
a different stone, a different size, a simpler border or a deeper inlay, that is a normal request and
not an unusual one; it is how most of these orders actually get placed.

You are equally welcome to bring something that is not on this page at all. A photograph of a piece
you saw, a design from a family heirloom, a shape you have sketched, a motif you want repeated across
a set: send it across. We will design it with you, brief the sculptors who will make it, and follow
it through to the address you name.

Send us the shortlist, the count and the date. We will tell you what is reachable and what it costs.

## Frequently asked questions

### What should we give different kinds of guests?

Most gifting lists are three or four tiers rather than one gift repeated. For the **sambandhi and immediate family**, the most worked piece on your list: a pietra dura jewellery box, an inlaid tray, a boxed pooja set. For **elders**, something ceremonial rather than decorative: a shagun thali, a pooja thali set, a lotus diya holder. For the **bridal party and close friends**, personal keepable objects that take a name or a date, such as a chooda box, attar bottles, a photo frame pair. For **colleagues and business guests**, black stone desk pieces carry no religious content and suit a mixed-faith list. For **out-of-town guests**, stay under about six inches so it travels in a suitcase. Tell us the tiers and the counts and we will suggest a piece for each.

### How many pieces can you make, and is there a minimum?

There is no fixed minimum. We take a single piece and we take several hundred. What changes with the number is the **piece**, not the willingness. Elaborate work like dense parchin kari inlay or deep pierced jali is right for one gift or twenty; at a hundred and upward you want something small, low-relief and geometric that repeats without drifting, such as coasters, diyas, a compact kumkum vessel or a small chowki set. Tell us your count first and we will tell you honestly which of the pieces you have picked will hold up at that number, and which one to choose instead.

### Our wedding is soon. Can you make it in time?

Ask before you rule it out. A good share of what we sell **already exists** (pieces held by us, or already carved by the artist families we work with), and we ask them directly once you tell us the form and size, then send you photographs of the actual piece. If one of those is right there is **no carving wait at all**, and that is usually what makes a close date work. A **commissioned** piece is the other route: small decorative pieces take **four to eight weeks**, and a murti takes **eight to twelve weeks**, depending on size, stone and detail. Send us your date at the start and we will tell you which of the two you are looking at, rather than promise something we cannot keep.

### Is everything made to order, or do you have ready pieces?

Both. Some pieces are **already carved** and simply need to reach you. They are either stock we hold or finished work sitting with the sculptors and artist families we work with, which we ask about once you tell us what you are after. You see photographs of the actual piece, not a render. Everything else is **commissioned**: you choose the form, stone, size, finish and quantity, and it is made for you. Smaller pieces turn up ready far more often than large ones.

### Do you make marble statues as wedding gifts too?

Yes, but they are not on this page, and that is deliberate. This collection is for pieces that are **handed over**. Nothing here is taller than sixteen inches, because a guest gift has to travel home from the function. A Lakshmi-Ganesh pair, a Radha Krishna jugal jodi or a Ram-Sita vivah pair is a wonderful gift to the couple for their new home, but it is delivered and installed rather than carried, so it sits with the [Lakshmi Ganesh pairs](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/collections/lakshmi-ganesh-pair), the [Radha Krishna statues](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/collections/radha-krishna-statues) and the [Ram-Sita statues](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/collections/ram-sita-statues) instead. If you are gifting at that scale, start there and tell us the date.

### Can we see the gift box before we commit?

Yes. The boxed sets on this page are photographed open with the lid propped behind so you can see the fitted die-cut insert and how the pieces sit in it. For a larger order we would normally make a **single sample piece in its box** and send you photographs, or the sample itself, before the rest is started. That is the step that prevents surprises at a hundred pieces. Tell us if you want the box in a particular colour, or a card or name slip seated inside it.

### Which stone should we choose for a wedding gift?

Five stones are in production. **Makrana white marble** is the usual choice for anything auspicious or ceremonial. It is the warm temple white from Nagaur district that was used on the Taj Mahal, and it takes fine inlay without chipping. **Vietnam white marble** is cooler and brighter with an even grain, good for clean modern forms. **Black stone** takes a mirror polish and reads contemporary rather than devotional, which suits desk pieces, dry-fruit boxes and frames. **Dholpur pink sandstone** is warm and matte and unmistakably Rajasthani. **Cast marble dust** is the sensible answer for small pieces at high counts. Tell us the piece and the count and we will suggest which of the five actually fits.

### Can you personalise the pieces with a name, a date or a monogram?

Yes, and it is one of the most common requests. Names, initials, a wedding date or a short line can be **engraved** into the stone, or set as **brass wire inlay** flush into the surface for something more worked. Nameplates and the flat faces of trays, boxes and frames take personalisation best; heavily carved or inlaid surfaces have less room for it. Send us the exact spelling and any date format you want in writing, and we will send back a proof before anything is cut, because engraving cannot be undone.

### Can you ship to several addresses, or send gifts abroad?

Yes to both. Gifts can go to one address for you to distribute at the function, or to several addresses if you are sending to guests directly. Send the list and we will quote the freight alongside the pieces. We ship worldwide, and for families gifting abroad the honest constraint is freight rather than making: sea freight is economical but slow, air freight costs more and is usually what makes a date work. Tell us the destinations at the start so freight is in the quote rather than a surprise at the end.
