## Murugan murtis for Tamil homes and temples

Murugan (Kartikeya in the north, Subramanya and Skanda elsewhere, Arumugam and Velan to the
devotees who use his epithets daily) is the deity of the Tamil hills, and the murti a family
commissions usually reflects which of his six hill shrines they hold closest. That is the useful
starting point for this page. A household that goes to Palani wants something quite different
from one whose vow is at Thiruchendur, and both differ from a family who simply want Bala Murugan
for a child's room. Everything shown here is carved to order by the master sculptors we work
with, so the form, the stone and the scale are chosen rather than picked off a shelf.

## The forms carved here

The [standing Murugan with the vel](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/makrana-white-marble-standing-murugan-with-vel-2ft)
is the everyday household form. Riding the peacock (Mayil Vahana) is the other great one, shown
here [in white marble at 30 inches](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/vietnam-white-marble-murugan-on-peacock-mayil-30in)
and [with the wings spread at 33](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/black-marble-murugan-peacock-wings-spread-33in), which
is a substantially more open composition. Then the named shrine forms: the
[Palani Dandayudhapani](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/black-granite-palani-dandayudhapani-murugan-18in), the austere
one, and the [Thiruchendur Subramanya](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/sagyin-white-marble-thiruchendur-subramanya-vel-30in)
with the vel held upright. For family shrines there is
[Murugan with Valli and Deivanai](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/vietnam-white-marble-murugan-valli-deivanai-2ft), his
two consorts, and the six-faced
[Shanmukha](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/makrana-white-marble-shanmukha-murugan-six-faced-3ft). Quieter options
include a [seated Murugan on a lotus](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/dholpur-pink-sandstone-seated-murugan-lotus-20in),
a [14-inch Bala Murugan](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/sagyin-white-marble-bala-murugan-child-14in), and a
[42-inch warrior form with the vel raised](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/makrana-white-marble-warrior-murugan-raised-vel-42in).

## The vel, the peacock, and what a devotee checks first

Murugan is identified by two things before anything else, and a murti that gets them wrong is
never quite right no matter how well it is finished.

The vel is the spear his mother gave him, and it is not a generic weapon. The blade is broad and
leaf-shaped, tapering to a point, and it is held with intent: upright beside the shoulder in the
Thiruchendur manner, or angled forward in the warrior forms. A thin, sword-like blade reads
immediately as wrong to anyone who grew up with the iconography.

The peacock matters as much. It is a vahana, not a decorative perch, and the two figures have to
relate: the bird bearing weight, the deity seated with the ease of someone who belongs there.
Where the wings are spread the composition needs more depth than a niche usually allows, which is
why that piece is proportioned differently from the folded-wing version.

The Palani form is the exception to all of it. There Murugan stands as Dandayudhapani, stripped
of ornament, holding only a staff, having renounced everything after the quarrel over the fruit
of wisdom. No vel, no peacock, no jewellery. If you ask for Palani and receive an ornamented
figure with a spear, you have not been given the form you asked for.

## Choosing the stone

Black stone carries the South Indian temple convention and is the most requested for Palani and
for pieces that will stand in a shrine seen under lamps. Makrana white marble is the classical
North Indian answer and takes the fine detail of the vel blade and the peacock's feathering
without fragility. Vietnam white marble is cooler and brighter than Makrana, which suits the
peacock compositions where you want the bird to read clearly against a wall. Dholpur pink
sandstone is matte and warm and belongs in a courtyard or garden shrine. Cast marble dust keeps
a smaller household murti affordable. The same sculptors work all five.

## Size and placement

Fourteen to 22 inches is the range most homes settle on: a shelf shrine, a niche, a child's
room in the case of Bala Murugan. Between 24 and 33 inches you are in a dedicated pooja room, and
this is where the peacock forms start to make sense, since they need width as well as height. At
36 to 42 inches you are furnishing a hall or a temple, and the raised vel adds real height above
the figure itself, so measure the ceiling and not just the plinth. Murugan is conventionally
placed facing east or north; tell us the direction and the murti is set to suit it.

## Plain stone or hand-painted

Most pieces here are plain polished stone. The
[hand-painted Murugan with vel and peacock](https://www.tilakmandirwala.com/products/hand-painted-marble-murugan-with-vel-peacock-2ft)
is the alternative, and it is a genuinely different object, because the peacock's plumage in colour is
closer to how the deity appears on temple gopurams and in household prints than a monochrome
carving ever is. Painted surfaces need a dry cloth and occasional touch-up across the years.
Plain stone needs almost nothing.

## Caring for it

Dry dusting is the whole routine for polished stone. Lift garlands off rather than letting them
sit and mark the surface. Nothing acidic on any of the stones: no vinegar, no lemon, no
descaler. Sandstone outdoors takes a soft brush and plain water.

## Make it yours

These twelve are a starting point. A form you like at a different size, the Thiruchendur posture
in white rather than the stone shown, Valli and Deivanai on a shared base instead of separate:
all ordinary requests, and all settled before carving begins. If your family's murti follows a
particular temple's swaroop, send a photograph and we will work from that instead; it is usually
the fastest route to a piece that feels right. Message us on WhatsApp to talk it through, and we
will quote it and follow it from the bench to your door.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does a custom Murugan marble statue take to make?

Ask before you assume a date is out of reach. A Murugan murti in a common size and stone may already be carved and waiting with the artist families we work with. That means no carving wait, and photographs of the actual piece sent to you first. Carved to your brief it is **8 to 12 weeks**, depending on stone, size and detail. Multi-figure forms like the Valli-Deivanai group and the six-faced Shanmukha take longer, because every face and figure is carved individually. We share progress photos at each milestone.

### What size Murugan statue should I choose for my home?

For a **pooja room or shelf**, 14 to 20 inches works well. For a **living-room mandir**, 24 to 36 inches gives appropriate weight. For a **temple entrance or grand shrine**, 36 to 48 inches makes a commanding centrepiece. Share your space photo on WhatsApp and we'll suggest a size that fits your room.

### Which stone is best for a Murugan murti?

**White marble** (Makrana or Vietnam) is the most popular for home shrines and shows the vel and peacock detailing beautifully. **Black stone** is striking for the **Palani Dandayudhapani** and warrior forms, and **Dholpur pink sandstone** suits decorative seated pieces. Tell us your preference on WhatsApp before we start so we source it correctly.

### Can you make the Valli-Deivanai group or the Shanmukha (six-faced) form?

Yes. We craft **Murugan with Valli and Deivanai** as a devotional family group, and the grand **Shanmukha / Arumugam** form with six faces and twelve arms. Both are complex compositions carved on a shared base. Pricing scales with the number of figures and detail, so share your reference on WhatsApp for a quote.

### Can I have the peacock with wings spread or a prabhavali arch?

Absolutely. The **peacock vahana (Mayil)** can be carved with tail feathers fanned as a natural prabhavali behind Murugan, and the murti framed within an ornate **prabhavali arch (thoranam)**. Share a reference image and our artisans will adapt the composition to match.

### Is this suitable as an NRI gift? Can you ship internationally?

Yes, Murugan murtis are among the most-requested pieces for the **Tamil diaspora**, especially across the **USA, Malaysia, and Singapore**. We ship worldwide with experienced freight partners, multi-layer crating, and full insurance. We share an exact freight quote after the murti is finalised so there are no surprises at delivery.
