It is the least common of the Buddha postures in Indian homes and the most particular about where it goes, because a reclining figure is horizontal. Where a seated Buddha needs a corner, a reclining one needs a run of length: a low console, a garden bed, the foot of a wall. That single fact drives most of the decisions on this page. Any posture or size shown can be made in any of those five. ## Length, not height: how to size a reclining Buddha This is the measurement people get wrong, and it is worth being blunt about. A reclining Buddha is quoted by its length, not its height. A "3-foot" reclining Buddha is three feet long and perhaps fourteen inches tall, so it occupies a completely different footprint from a 3-foot seated figure, which is three feet tall on a base perhaps eighteen inches square. People who order by the number they are used to are routinely surprised. In practice: a 2-foot reclining Buddha suits a console table, a wide shelf or a low sideboard. A 3-foot piece wants a dedicated surface or a plinth of its own. At 4 to 5 feet you are landscaping (a garden bed, a pool edge, the base of a wall), and the piece will need to be positioned once and left, since stone at that length is not something to move casually. Measure the surface before you choose, and measure its depth as well as its run. A reclining figure with its back against a wall reads correctly; one overhanging the front edge of a console does not. ## Placing a reclining Buddha respectfully Because this is the Parinirvana image, placement carries a little more weight than with a seated Buddha, and it is worth knowing the conventions even if you treat the piece as sculpture. The figure lies on its right side, and the head should not point toward a doorway or a bathroom. Raised off the floor is preferable to floor level: a plinth, a low table, a garden platform. Feet are not pointed toward a shrine or an altar if there is one in the same room. Outdoors, a reclining Buddha sits comfortably in a bed of low planting with the head end sheltered, which is also the practical arrangement for weathering. None of this is required of you. But these are the questions we are asked most often once a reclining piece arrives, so they are easier settled before you choose the size. ## Choosing the stone Makrana white marble is the classical choice and the most requested for an interior reclining Buddha: dense, close-grained, and it takes the long smooth planes of the robe without showing tool marks. Vietnam white marble is cooler and brighter, useful in a dim room where you want the figure to read. Black stone gives a much heavier, quieter presence and suits a modern interior or a covered terrace. Dholpur pink sandstone is the outdoor answer: matte, warm, and it weathers comfortably in a garden where marble would want shelter. Cast marble dust is available where a smaller reclining piece needs to stay affordable. ## Living outdoors A reclining Buddha in a garden is exposed along its whole length, which is more surface than a seated figure presents, so a few practical points. Sandstone is the most forgiving and will develop a patina rather than staining. Marble outdoors wants a sheltered position (under a tree canopy, against a wall, on a covered terrace) and benefits from a stone sealer reapplied every couple of years. Set any reclining piece on a bed of gravel or a plinth rather than directly on soil, so it is not sitting in standing water after rain. Moss and algae come off with a soft brush and plain water; leave the pressure washer alone. ## Caring for a reclining Buddha Indoors, dry dusting with a soft cloth is the whole routine, and the long horizontal surfaces of a reclining figure collect more dust than a seated one, so it is worth doing more often. No acidic cleaners on any of the stones: no vinegar, no lemon, no bathroom descaler.
