## Tirupati Balaji murtis for the home

Venkateswara of Tirumala (Balaji to most of the families who commission him, Srinivasa and
Govinda in the older names) is one of the few deities whose home murti is judged directly
against a specific temple image. Devotees know the moolavar at Tirumala: the erect standing
figure, the four arms, the distinctive namam covering the forehead and eyes. A Balaji murti that
drifts from that is not read as an interpretation, it is read as a mistake. Families in Andhra
and Telangana commission these, and so, increasingly, do households abroad who want a
Tirumala-faithful murti for a shrine far from the hill. Every piece here is carved to order by

## The forms carved here

form: the deity as he stands in the sanctum, unornamented, the carving itself carrying the

murti is dressed as he appears for darshan, with crown, garlands and jewellery worked into the

adds the flame-bordered surround that frames a temple murti. Two forms extend beyond the single

## Moolavar or alankaram: the decision that shapes the piece

This is the fork worth settling before anything else, because it changes what the sculptor
actually carves rather than merely how the murti is finished.

The moolavar form is the deity as he stands in the sanctum: erect, four-armed, the lower right
hand in varada and the lower left at the thigh, with almost no ornament. It is austere, and it
puts every demand on the carving of the face and the proportion of the figure. Families who want
the murti to feel like the sanctum itself choose this.

The alankaram form is the deity dressed for darshan: the crown, the layered garlands, the
jewellery, sometimes the prabhavali arch behind. It is the image most people actually see, since
the moolavar is rarely viewed undressed. It photographs better, it fills a niche more completely,
and it asks a great deal more carving time.

Neither is more correct. What matters is that you decide, because a murti carved as moolavar
cannot be dressed later in stone, and an alankaram figure cannot be stripped back.

One detail we will always ask about: the namam. On the Tirumala murti it covers the forehead and
extends over the eyes, which is unusual and is precisely what devotees look for. It is carved as
specified, not approximated.

## Choosing the stone

Black stone is the closest to the Tirumala original and the most requested here. The moolavar is
dark, and a black murti reads as familiar the moment it is installed. Makrana white marble is the
classical alternative and is the better ground for a full alankaram piece, where crown and
garland detail need a stone that holds a crisp edge. Vietnam white marble is cooler and brighter,
useful when the shrine is dim and you want the figure to lift. Dholpur pink sandstone suits an
outdoor or semi-covered installation. Cast marble dust brings a small home murti within reach.

## Size and placement

Twelve inches suits a shelf or a compact home mandir; 18 to 24 is where most pooja rooms settle,
and it is also the range where the Balaji-Padmavati pair works without crowding, since two
figures need width that a single murti does not. Thirty inches upward is a dedicated shrine
room, and 36 to 48 inches a hall or a trust temple. Balaji is conventionally installed facing
east. If your shrine faces otherwise, tell us and the murti and its base are set for the space
you actually have.

## Shipping it abroad

A large share of these go to households outside India, and it is worth knowing what that
involves before you choose a size. Stone is heavy and unforgiving in transit, so pieces destined
for export are crated on a timber frame with the figure immobilised rather than merely padded,
and the arms and any prabhavali arch (the parts that project) are the ones that get the most
protection. Sea freight is the norm above roughly 24 inches; air is workable below it and much
faster. We handle the crating and the paperwork and quote it with the piece, so the number you
see is the delivered number rather than a surprise later.

## Caring for it

Dust dry with a soft cloth. Where the murti is dressed and garlanded daily, lift the flowers off
rather than letting them sit against the stone. No acidic cleaners on any of these stones: no
vinegar, no lemon, no bathroom descaler. Sandstone outdoors takes a soft brush and plain water.
