It is the same material behind the dark, mirror-smooth sculpture of the Dravidian temple tradition. It is dense, close-grained and non-porous, which is why it takes a deeper polish than marble and holds a crisp edge without chipping. On this desk set the sculptors we work with polish every outward face to a full mirror, then cut a single shallow channel around each piece and set a fine brass strip into it. The brass sits flush with the stone, so you feel one continuous surface under your hand and see only a thin gold line catching the light.
