## The swing, and the empty seat
Most stone jhulas sold for a home mandir arrive with the deity already carved into the seat, which ties the piece to one murti forever. This one is deliberately the opposite. The seat is a bare slab, cut flat and left vacant, sized to take a 4 to 6 inch Laddu Gopal of your own: the swing as furniture, the murti as yours. It hangs level on four dark metal chains, so it rocks slowly the way a jhula should instead of sitting rigid, and the flat top means a small silver or brass Bal Gopal sits as steadily on it as a stone one. Families who already dress and rock their Laddu Gopal each morning tend to want exactly this: a swing built around the murti they have, not around one somebody else chose.

## The stone
Black granite is quarried across southern India, where it has been the working stone of Dravidian temple sculpture for well over a thousand years. It is harder than marble and almost non-porous, which is why it takes one of the deepest polishes in the natural-stone trade and why it holds a sharp, machined-looking edge without chipping. On this jhula the arch is worked up to a near-mirror sheen so it reads as one continuous wet-black curve, while the seat and the plinth are held back to a softer satin so they do not throw glare across whatever murti is standing on them. Nothing here is dyed, painted or coated. The colour is the rock itself, and it will not fade.

## How it is made
Work starts from a solid block. The form is roughed out with a cutting wheel and then taken down by hand: the arch shaped against a template so its curve stays true read from either side, the two posts squared, their lotus-bud finials turned and finished with hand files. The plinth carries a single band of beaded moulding, chiselled by hand, and that band is the only ornament on the whole piece; everything else is left plain on purpose. Polishing runs through progressive grits until the arch reaches its sheen and the seat settles at satin. The chain and eye-hooks are steel hardware, sourced and fitted to the stone at the Jaipur workshop rather than made there, and set so the seat hangs level and swings clear of the posts.

## Sizing it for your mandir
At 15 inches tall the jhula stands about the height of a hardback book on end, and wants roughly 11 inches of width and 6 inches of depth, which fits most home mandir platforms as well as a console or a windowsill beside one. The seat takes a Laddu Gopal of about 4 to 6 inches comfortably; a larger murti will sit on it but will crowd the arch. Black reads visually heavier than white marble at the same size, so give the piece a little clear space on either side rather than pressing it between lamps and thalis. It looks best at eye level when you are seated for pooja, which on most mandirs means the second shelf rather than the top.

## Making it yours
Height, seat width and the depth of the polish can all be changed: a taller jhula for a bigger murti, a fully matte body, or the same design in Makrana white marble if black sits too dark in your mandir. Send across the measurements of the murti you already own and the seat will be cut to fit it.
