## Temple granite, contemporary lines

Black granite is the stone of the South Indian temple tradition. It is quarried in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, and has been used for Dravidian deity panels for centuries because it is dense enough to hold a razor-fine line and hard enough to keep it for generations. This pair takes that temple material and reads it through a contemporary lens: no fussy filigree, no busy canopy, just two seated forms sharing one low lotus base, cut in broad clean planes and brought to a mirror polish that turns the stone almost liquid under a single downlight.

## How the granite is worked and polished

Every piece is made to order by the independent master sculptors Tilak Mandirwala has worked with in Jaipur for years. Granite is unforgiving: it takes carbide points and diamond abrasives where marble would allow a softer chisel. So the block comes down in stages: block-out, primary massing, detail carving, then a long progressive polish through successively finer grits. Faces, hands, trunk and lotus petals are finished entirely by hand; nothing about the expression is left to a machine.

## The canonical forms of Lakshmi and Ganesha

Both forms stay canonical. Lakshmi is four-armed, with lotus blooms in her upper hands and abhaya and varada (reassurance and giving) in the lower two. Ganesha holds his modak, his trunk curls to his left in the auspicious turn, and his mouse vahana sits at the base beside him. Worshipping the two together is a household convention across India and the fixed centrepiece of Diwali and Lakshmi Puja: Ganesha to clear the obstacle, Lakshmi for what follows it. Seating them on one shared lotus base rather than two separate thrones is the deliberate departure here, and it is what gives the piece its modern silhouette.

## Placing the 21-inch pair

At 21 inches the pair suits a built-in altar niche, an entryway console, or a shelf in a modern pooja corner where black stone can play against pale plaster or microcement. Give it a plain wall, since a mirror finish is at its best with nothing behind it to reflect. A north-east facing placement is the usual choice for a home altar, and one warm point light from above will do more for the carving than any amount of ambient lighting.

## Other sizes, stones and a honed finish

Sizes from tabletop to floor-standing can be cut to order, and the same composition can be made in Makrana or Vietnam white marble if you want the pair to read light instead of dark. A honed matte finish is available if the mirror polish feels too reflective for your room. Send us your niche dimensions on WhatsApp and we will work back from there.
