## The absolute-black granite

Black granite carries the weight of South Indian temple sculpture. Quarried in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, it is the stone Dravidian workshops have shaped into deity panels and sanctum murtis for centuries: dense, close-grained, and dark enough that carved detail reads through shadow rather than disappearing into it. This pair is cut from an absolute-black grade with no visible flecking, so the jet tone stays even across both figures and the shared plinth beneath them.

## How granite is cut and mirror-polished

Work begins in the Jaipur workshop we work with with a rough block squared to the finished footprint, after which the sculptor establishes the two seated masses and their lotus pedestals before any ornament is touched. Granite resists the chisel far more than marble, so detailing moves slowly: the crown tiers, the beaded necklaces, Lakshmi's draped folds and Ganesh's incised forehead mark are cut with fine points and rasps, then taken through a progressive polish sequence that ends at a true mirror surface. Faces, hands and attributes are always finished by hand, and no machine tooling touches them.

## The South Indian form and a 15-inch centrepiece

Both deities sit in padmasana, each on its own carved lotus, in the fuller South Indian idiom rather than the plainer North Indian treatment. Lakshmi holds lotus blossoms in her upper hands with a kalash at her side and her lower right hand open in varada; Ganesh carries a bowl of modak, raises his lower right hand in blessing, and shows the single broken tusk that names him Ekadanta, his trunk curving to his own left in the form most households keep at home. Pairing the two is the Diwali convention, with Lakshmi seated beside the remover of obstacles.

At 15 inches the pair reads as an altar centrepiece rather than a floor installation, sized for a pooja shelf, a mandir niche or a console in a home where brass lamps and jasmine already set the register. The mirror polish does something specific in that setting: lamp flame and daylight travel across the black surface as moving highlights, so the figures shift through the day instead of sitting flat. Give the pair a lighter wall behind it, because the contrast is what makes the silhouette legible from across a room.

## Other heights, bases and lighter stones

This composition can be carved at other heights, on a shared singhasan base instead of separate lotus pedestals, or in Makrana and Vietnam white marble if the room calls for a lighter stone. Message us on WhatsApp with your shelf dimensions and we will work back from there.
