## Why black granite for a South Indian sanctum

Black granite is the stone the South Indian sanctum was built around. From the Pallava workshops at Mahabalipuram through the Chola-era sanctum images of the Tamil country, sculptors worked a dense, close-grained black stone precisely because it holds an edge: the deep undercut of a jewelled girdle, the clean separation between a raised arm and the torso behind it. This 60-inch Mahishasuramardini is carved in that stone and to that logic: mass first, then detail cut back into it, then a polish that turns the broad planes to dark mirror while the recesses stay matte and readable.

## How the Durga is carved by hand

TMW commissions this piece from independent master sculptors in Jaipur who cut granite by hand. Roughing takes the block down to the silhouette; the tribhanga stance, the lion and the vanquished buffalo at the base are blocked as one mass, so the group never reads as parts assembled after the fact. Detail carving follows: the kirita-mukuta, the layered temple jewellery, the pleats of the silk sari, each arm and the attribute it carries. The face, the hands and the drapery folds are finished entirely by hand; nothing on this piece is machine-smoothed at the final stage.

## The Mahishasuramardini form, and the space it needs

Mahishasuramardini is Durga at the moment the Devi Mahatmya describes, with the buffalo demon Mahishasura subdued beneath her, the trishul in her raised hand, sword, bow and chakra distributed across her many arms, and the lion that carries her standing steady at her flank. South Indian temple convention keeps the face composed rather than furious: the victory is already decided, and the goddess presides over it. The tribhanga bend at neck, waist and knee is what gives a static stone figure its sense of forward weight.

At five feet on its lotus plinth, this is a sanctum-scale image rather than a household murti, sized for a temple garbhagriha, a community mandir hall, or the entrance of an institution that wants a figure people look up at. Allow clear floor around it: the lion and the buffalo push the footprint to roughly 33 by 30 inches, and the group needs viewing distance for the arms to separate visually. Granite is fully weather-stable, so a covered mandapa, an open courtyard shrine or a temple forecourt all work.

## Commissioning the Durga in another size or stone

Height, stone and finish are all open. The same composition can be cut smaller for a home shrine, taken up in white Makrana marble, or left honed instead of mirror-polished where sanctum lighting is low, and inscribed donor panels on the plinth are a common request for temple installations. Send us the sanctum dimensions and we will work back from there.
