This abstract interpretation of the Buddha captures a graceful forward-bending posture, the body flowing like carved drapery. It is carved in Bhainslana black marble from Rajasthan, a dense, near-black stone with no visible veining, and finished with a deep mirror polish. Light runs in long, clean highlights down the curve of the back and along each fold, while the recesses fall to black, so the simple flowing form reads clearly from across a space. At 48 inches it is a striking sculptural centrepiece on a plinth in a courtyard, a hotel lobby or a meditation hall, or beside a lotus pond. Marble keeps a mirror polish best out of the rain, so for a garden choose a covered spot such as a verandah, a pergola or a courtyard under a roof.
