Ballaleshwar is the only one of the eight Ashtavinayak swaroops named for a devotee rather than for Ganpati himself. The boy Ballal of Pali kept his puja going through a beating from the villagers, and the story holds that Ganpati chose to stay on in Pali under the devotee's name. This 21-inch murti follows the Pali form closely: four arms, a heavy potbelly, the trunk turning to his own left, and the mushak set at the base beside his foot.

## The cypress throne, and the set eyes

What separates the Pali swaroop from other seated Ganpati murtis is the singhasan behind him. Its backrest is cut in the shape of a cypress tree, so the figure sits inside a tall leafed arch instead of against a plain slab, and that silhouette is how devotees recognise Ballaleshwar at a glance. The murti at Pali carries diamonds in the eyes and the navel and a silver tilak on the brow; this carving repeats the idea, with bright set pupils in silver surrounds and a three-line tilak with a round bindu above them, so the face still reads from a few feet away in lamp light.

## Why this one is left unpolished

Black marble takes one of the deepest polishes in the stone trade, and most black murtis are finished that way. This one is not. The surface is worked to a raw matte with the natural grain standing proud, so the stone reads as rock rather than as glass. A diya set in front of it picks up the tool texture across the belly and the folds of the dhoti instead of throwing back a single hard highlight, and a matte surface forgives the water marks and fingerprints that a mirror finish shows after every abhishek.

## Size, weight and where it sits

At 21 inches this is a platform murti rather than a shelf piece. It is roughly 52 kg in solid black stone, so it is a two-person lift and it wants a stone chowki or a built platform under it rather than a wooden shelf. It suits a dedicated puja room, a Ganesh Chaturthi sthapana that gets re-used every year, or an entrance niche in a Maharashtrian home where the Ashtavinayak connection is understood without explanation.

## Made to order

The specification is not fixed. Every piece is carved for you by the master sculptors we work with in and around Jaipur, so the height can move up or down, the cypress arch can be plainer or more ornate, and the same swaroop can be cut in Makrana white marble, Vietnam white marble or Dholpur pink sandstone if black is not what your mandir wants. We design it with you, brief the sculptor, and follow the piece through to delivery at your door. Send us the depth of the platform you have and we will come back with a drawing and a quote.
