## The Theur swaroop and its jewel

Chintamani Ganpati is the Ashtavinayak murti at Theur, a village set where the Mula and Mutha meet the Bhima, about 25 km east of Pune. The name comes from the story of the chintamani, the wish-granting jewel that Ganesha recovered from Guna, son of King Abhijit, and returned to the sage Kapila. Kapila would not take it back and tied it around Ganesha's neck under a kadamba tree instead, which is why Theur also carries the older name Kadambanagar. Chinta means worry, and this is the swaroop devotees turn to when they want a settled mind rather than a specific favour. On a 24-inch murti the jewel is cut as a heavy medallion hanging on a chain at the throat, so the story the form is named for is legible from across the room.

## What the carving holds

The attribute set is complete and cut in stone rather than suggested: four arms, a full potbelly, a single broken right tusk, a modak in the lower left hand, and the mushak at the base with its face turned toward the deity's feet. The trunk curls to his own left, which is the direction the Theur idol turns and the convention for a murti kept at home. The eyes are inlaid in silver with bright gem pupils, following the jewelled eyes of the temple idol, and a three-line tilak with a round bindu sits on the brow. A carved disc rises behind the head, and the whole figure rests on a moulded plinth taken from the same block, so the murti stands clear of the shelf rather than flat against it.

## The stone and its rough-hewn surface

Black marble for a piece like this comes from the Indian trade, with Markapur in Andhra Pradesh the long-standing source; denser, more even beds are also brought in from Vietnam. The stone is close-grained and will hold a mirror polish, which is exactly what this murti refuses. The sculptors we work with leave the body coarse and granular, worked back with point and claw chisels and never carried through to the polishing wheel, so light breaks across the surface instead of sliding off it. Tool marks stay legible over the shoulders and the belly, while the face, the trunk and the plinth mouldings are hand-finished so those edges read crisp against the rough ground. The result is a matt, stone-first black that sits closer to an old Deccan sanctum than to a showroom slab.

## Sizing it for a home mandir

At 24 inches this Chintamani Ganpati works as the principal murti of a home mandir rather than an accent beside one. Allow roughly 12 inches of width, 11 of depth and about 17 kg of load on the shelf or platform it will stand on, and leave a hand's width of clear space either side so the four arms and the disc behind the head are not crowded. The idol at Theur faces east, and an east- or north-facing placement is the usual choice at home. Every piece is made to order, so the height can move either way, the same swaroop can be cut in Makrana white or Vietnam white marble, and the surface can be carried from this rough-hewn texture to a soft satin polish if a darker room needs more reflection. Send us a photo of the niche on WhatsApp and we will work the proportions to it, brief the sculptor, and follow the piece through to your door.
