## The stone

Bhainslana black marble is a dense, fine-grained near-black marble from Rajasthan. It forms deep underground from slowly cooling magma, which is why its crystal structure is so fine and so evenly packed. Quarried in dark, near-uniform blocks, it carries almost no veining in the grades used for figure work, and it is dense enough to hold fine detail. That hardness is what lets it hold a crisp edge: the fringe of the blanket, the ridges of the check pattern and the knuckles of the folded hands all stay sharp instead of softening. Here the surface is carried to a mirror polish, so the stone reads as a deep jet black, with highlights tracing the carved folds of the blanket.

## Who this murti shows

Neem Karoli Baba, Maharajji to those who knew him, lived and taught in the Kumaon hills, and the ashram at Kainchi Dham near Nainital remains the centre of his following. He died in 1973, within living memory, and the record of his face is photographic rather than iconographic. The murti tradition settled on a fixed set of markers, all of them carved here: the bare bald head with no turban or head cloth, the short trimmed beard and moustache, the heavy chequered blanket drawn over both shoulders that earned him the name Blanket Baba, the dhoti beneath it, and the broad, stout, unmistakably elderly body. He sits in sukhasana on a plain rectangular plinth, both hands resting open in his lap, feet bare and one foot forward. This is the quiet darshan form rather than the raised-hand ashirwad.

## How it is carved

Work starts from a single block, roughed down under heavy chisels until the seated mass and the plinth read as one piece. The blanket is the difficulty. Its check pattern is cut in shallow low relief, shallow enough that the weave registers as texture rather than as incised lines, and its fringe is undercut so the edge lifts clear of the stone behind it. The face, the hands and the drapery folds are finished entirely by hand; no machine work touches them. Polishing runs through successive abrasive grades until the stone reaches a mirror. Every piece is carved to order in Jaipur by the sculptors Tilak Mandirwala works with, so no two are identical, and a commission of this size and subject typically takes eight to twelve weeks from confirmation.

## Sizing it for your space

At 24 inches tall the murti occupies a footprint of roughly 12 by 11 inches and weighs about 17 kilograms, which puts it within reach of a console table, a low altar shelf or a built-in niche without structural preparation. That scale suits a meditation room, a study or a gallery recess: large enough to hold a room from across it, small enough that the face stays near seated eye level rather than looming. Give it a clear background, since black stone reads best against a pale wall where the edge highlight outlines the silhouette. Keep the piece elevated on its own plinth or a chowki, never at floor level, and leave the front of the plinth clear so a lamp or flowers sit before him rather than crowding the figure.

## Commissioning a variant

The same darshan form is carved in Makrana marble, in Vietnam marble, and hand-painted in polychrome where the blanket is picked out as tartan check. Sizes run from 12 inches for a shelf up to five feet on commission. The plinth can be cut as a plain block, a moulded step, or a low takhat in the manner of the wooden bench he sat on.
