## A darshan of the face, not a full figure

At Khatu in Sikar district, Rajasthan, the queue that forms every Ekadashi is for a darshan of Shyam Baba's face. He is Barbarika, who gave his head in daan before the Mahabharata war and was blessed by Krishna to be worshipped in Kaliyuga by Krishna's own name. This 15-inch panel follows that convention rather than the usual standing murti. The face rises in high relief straight out of an arched stele cut from the same block, so there is no join and no separate head anywhere on the piece; the cheeks and jaw merge back into the stone ground behind them.

## Why black stone reads this form correctly

Shyam means dark, and that name is the whole basis of the shringar. Black granite, the hardest stone on TMW's palette and the one that takes the deepest polish, carries the reading directly, without paint or applied colour. Worked to a mirror polish, the surface stays one unbroken black field across the arch, the mukut and the garlands, which is what lets the upright U-shaped Vaishnav tilak on the forehead register as the single bright mark on the panel. A carved lotus-petal border runs the length of the arch on both sides.

## How the panel is carved

The block is set out and roughed to the arch profile and the moulded base first, so the outline of the stele is fixed before any devotional detail is touched. The master sculptors TMW works with then cut the youthful, beardless face, the tiered mukut with its single peacock plume, and the two flower garlands falling either side. The garlands are undercut so they stand clear of the ground rather than sitting flat against it. Polishing runs last, through successive abrasive grades, and the recessed border and base moulding are taken to the same gloss so nothing on the panel reads dull against the rest.

## Placing a 15-inch panel at home

The panel stands about 15 inches tall and 10 inches wide and weighs roughly 16 kg, so it wants a solid chowki or a stone shelf rather than a light wooden bracket. Because it is a stele and only about four inches deep at the base, it fits a shallow mandir shelf or a wall alcove where a full-round murti of the same height would not sit at all. Set at eye level for someone seated on the floor, the face meets the gaze directly, which is the point of a mukh darshan piece.

## Make it yours

TMW designs each piece with you and briefs the sculptor, so the height, the depth of the base moulding and the width of the lotus border can all move. The same panel can be carved in Makrana white marble, Vietnam white marble or cast marble dust for a lighter mandir, and a family name or dedication can be cut into the base moulding. A panel in this form may already be carved, in which case TMW asks the sculptors it works with and sends you photographs of the actual piece, so there is no carving wait. A fresh commission runs eight to twelve weeks.
