## The Ganpati who carries his devotee's name

Among the eight Ashtavinayak swaroops, Ballaleshwar at Pali in Raigad is the only one known by the name of a devotee rather than by a name of Ganesha's own. The sthala purana remembers a boy named Ballal whose devotion held through everything done to break it, and the murti in that sanctum has been worshipped as a Brahmin form ever since: simply dressed, offered besan laddoo, his trunk turned to his left. This eighteen-inch piece follows that swaroop closely: four arms, a full potbelly, the single broken tusk, and the mushak settled at the foot of the seat.

## The cypress-tree throne

What marks the Pali murti out from the other seven swaroops is the seat. The stone throne behind Ballaleshwar rises in the form of a cypress, and that silhouette is cut as this piece's backrest, a tapering tree-shape framing the crown instead of a plain slab. It changes how the murti reads from the front, since the eye travels up the throne and lands on the face. The master sculptors we work with take the backrest and the body from a single block, so the tree and the figure share one grain and show none of the join lines an assembled piece would.

## Warm pink sandstone, honed soft

Dholpur sandstone is quarried in eastern Rajasthan. It is the stone Mughal builders reached for when they wanted palace facades and jharokhas that would hold their colour outdoors. In its pink shade it is a pale blush that warms further in sunlight, with a fine even sandy grain and small iron-oxide freckles that never repeat block to block. Honed to a soft matte, it carries no gloss at all: light settles on the surface rather than bouncing off it, which keeps the three-line tilak, the ear folds and the ornament borders legible from across a room.

## Where an eighteen-inch Ballaleshwar sits

Eighteen inches is a household size. It holds the centre of a home mandir shelf without crowding the lamps and thali around it, and it is equally at ease in an entrance niche where the murti greets people at the door. Sandstone weathers well, so a covered garden pavilion or a courtyard alcove is fair game too. This is the stone Rajasthan has left out in the sun for four hundred years. Allow a hand's width of clearance either side so the throne's silhouette reads properly.

## Make it yours

We design each commission with you before a chisel goes near the block: the height, how wide the throne spreads, how deep the carving runs on the base, whether the surface stays honed like this one or is finished a shade softer. Tell us the shelf or the niche it has to live in and the proportions are worked to that measurement. From there we brief the sculptor, follow the block through carving and finishing, and see the crated murti to your door, in India or overseas.
