## The pink Dholpur beds, and why they weather well

Dholpur pink sandstone comes out of the quarry belt around Dholpur in eastern Rajasthan, the same beds that supplied the great Mughal builders. Those quarries yield a range of shades, from the deep red used across Agra Fort and the Red Fort to the pale blush-pink beds this lingam is cut from. It is a fine, compact quartz sandstone with faint sedimentary banding and the occasional iron-oxide freckle, and it is one of the few Indian stones that genuinely prefers to live outdoors. Rain washes it, sun does not bleach it, and abhisheka water leaves no scar on it the way it can on softer polished marble.

## Cut by hand in Jaipur, and the tripundra mark

Every piece is cut to order by the independent master sculptors Tilak Mandirwala works with in Jaipur. The block is roughed out with hammer and point, the lingam shaft turned true by hand and eye, and the yoni base worked separately before the two are matched. The lotus-petal courses running around the base and the plinth are chiselled freehand, not machined, and the whole surface is finished to a soft honed matte rather than a polish. Sandstone is naturally porous, and a matte face is what lets the grain read as stone rather than as glaze.

The form is aniconic: no face, no limbs, only the shaft rising from the yoni that holds it. The yoni is the broad channelled dish beneath, and its projecting spout is the jaladhari, cut to carry away the milk, water and honey of abhisheka. It is set here so that the spout runs north, the conventional orientation for a lingam installed for daily worship. The three horizontal bands with the almond eye between them are the tripundra and Shiva's third eye, the two marks most commonly carved on a shaft of this scale.

## Placing a 36-inch lingam in the open air

At 36 inches the piece is built for the open air. It reads correctly in a walled courtyard, at the head of a garden path, or in a farmhouse or resort shrine where the family gathers outdoors for aarti. Set it on a raised stone platform rather than on paving, both for elevation and so the jaladhari has a clear fall. The base wants a shallow soakaway or a drainage channel below the spout. Allow six to eight feet of open ground in front of it; the mass of the yoni reads flat if you crowd it, and the stone catches golden-hour light better than it does noon.

## Other sizes, stones and a matching Nandi

Other sizes are cut on request, from tabletop shrine pieces to installations well above this one, and the same lingam can be made in Makrana or Vietnam white marble, black marble, or the deeper red Dholpur beds. A seated Nandi on a matching plinth is the usual companion, and the base can carry an engraved family name or an installation date for a griha pravesh.
