## The stone

Dholpur pink sandstone comes out of the quarries around Dhaulpur in eastern Rajasthan, the same beds that supplied Agra Fort and much of the Mughal building tradition. In its pink shade it reads as a warm pale blush, closer to sandy rose than to terracotta, with a very fine, even grain and the faint sedimentary banding that tells you it is natural stone rather than cast composite. It takes a soft, satin honing rather than a mirror polish; sandstone is slightly porous by nature, and the finish used here keeps that quiet matte surface intact. That same character is why the stone belongs outdoors: it holds up to sun, monsoon and temperature swing without the yellowing that troubles white marble in an open courtyard.

## The form

Neem Karoli Baba is shown seated cross-legged in sukhasana on a plain rectangular plinth, the right hand raised palm-out in ashirwad and the left resting easily on the knee, both feet bare and visible at the front. He is bald and bare-headed, with no turban and no head cloth, and has a short trimmed grey-white beard and the heavy-set, faintly amused face his devotees at Kainchi Dham describe. The chequered plaid blanket inseparable from his image is carved as thick, heavy drapery pulled over both shoulders, its fringed edge falling across the front of the seat. This is the darshan posture people keep on a home altar: a blessing given while seated, unhurried, at eye level with whoever is standing in front of him.

## How it is carved

Work begins on a single block of Dholpur sandstone, cut down by hand in the Jaipur workshop: rough cut to establish the seated mass, then the primary shape of the blanket and the knees, then detail. The blanket's check pattern is the demanding part: it is worked in shallow low relief so the weave reads in the stone itself rather than being scratched onto a smooth surface, and every one of those crossings is chased by hand. The face, the raised palm and the bare feet are hand-finished throughout, with no machine tooling on them, and the whole surface is then brought up through progressive grits to a soft satin. Fine chisel and rasp marks are left where they belong, because they are what separate carved stone from moulded stone.

## Sizing it for a garden or courtyard

At 30 inches tall, roughly 15 inches across the knees and about 21 kilograms, this is an outdoor-scale piece rather than a mantelpiece one. It sits well at the end of a garden path, in a courtyard alcove, or against a boundary wall in an ashram compound, and it wants four to five feet of clear space in front so a visitor can stand and take darshan without crowding it. The integrated plinth means no separate pedestal is needed, though many owners set it on a low stone or brick platform to lift it above splash height in the rains. Every piece is carved to order. Allow roughly 8 to 12 weeks from confirmation to dispatch, and message us on WhatsApp if you would like it in a different height, stone or finish.
