## Saraswati dressed for Vasant Panchami

On Vasant Panchami the house turns yellow. Mustard flowers go on the altar, children set their books and pens in front of the murti, and the goddess is dressed in pita vastra, the yellow of early spring. This Saraswati wears that colour for good. Her sari is painted a bright mustard yellow with a gold border, her crown, earrings, necklaces and bangles are picked out in burnished gold, and the lotus she sits on is washed a soft pink with gold-edged petals. Her face, hands and feet stay the natural white of the marble, so the paint frames the stone rather than hiding it.

## The form, kept canonical

She sits on a full lotus with one leg folded and the other lowered, playing the veena held across her body with her front two hands. Her back right hand holds an akshamala and her back left hand a palm-leaf book, the two signs of learning and recitation that students pray to her for. She is fully attired in a draped sari over a fitted choli, the pallu across her torso, with a tall crown and a gold-ringed halo behind it. Her swan, the hamsa that stands for telling the true from the false, rests at the front of the lotus. The face is young and calm, eyes softly lowered, with a small tilak.

## Makrana marble, painted by hand

The murti is carved from Makrana white marble, the fine-grained Rajasthan stone used for temple murtis for centuries, and then painted by hand in the Jaipur painted-murti tradition. The yellow is laid in even coats and the gold is drawn with a fine brush along every border, bead and crown point, so no two pieces carry exactly the same line. Because the folds of the sari and the strings of the veena are carved first, the paint follows real relief instead of drawing detail that is not there. The plain white plinth with its gold trim keeps the piece grounded and lifts it off the altar.

## Size, and how it is used

At 15 inches high and about 10 inches across, she fits a home pooja room shelf or a study corner and still reads clearly at a Saraswati puja with the family gathered round. Many households bring her out for Vasant Panchami and keep her through the school year near where the children study. To keep the paint bright, dust her with a soft dry cloth and avoid pouring water or milk over the painted surfaces; offer flowers and akshat at the base instead.

## Made to order in Jaipur

The colours can be changed before work begins: a classic white sari with gold work only, a deeper saffron, or a different lotus shade to match your altar. Tell us where she will sit and the colours of your mandir, and we will quote the murti and its delivery on WhatsApp.
