## The form: Navaneeta Krishna, and why there is no flute

Navaneeta Krishna is the infant Krishna caught mid-mischief: one hand lifted with a ball of freshly churned butter, the makhan pot standing open at his side. He sits on a low decorated plinth in true toddler proportions: a large head, soft rounded shoulders, dimpled feet folded under him. There is deliberately no flute. The flute belongs to the grown Murlidhar of Vrindavan, and adding it here would make a different murti altogether. The butter is the identity anchor, which is why the pot beside him is modelled and painted with as much attention as the child himself. A peacock feather rises from the crown, garlands fall past the waist, and anklets, bangles and a beaded necklace complete the ornament a Laddu Gopal is given by the family that keeps him.

## The colour: a murti painted entirely by hand

Every colour on the figure is brushwork, applied after the piece is cast and finished. The complexion is the deep blue Krishna is always given; the pitambar dhoti is yellow with a gold-worked fall; the crown, necklaces, armlets and anklets are picked out in gold; the garland carries pink and green flowerheads. The palette is not invented for the piece. It follows the convention Nathdwara pichwai painters have used for Krishna for generations. The plinth is handled differently on purpose: most of it is left as bare marble dust so the natural white sits under the colour and holds it up, and only the mouldings are painted with a scrolling gold vine, a band of pink lotus petals and a line of small flowers. The layers go on thin, so the carving underneath stays readable.

## The material: cast marble dust, and how it takes paint

Marble dust composite is crushed marble bound in resin, cast to shape and then finished by hand. It reads as a fine, even white with a slight warm undertone and none of the veining a quarried block carries, and it accepts paint far more readily than polished natural stone does, which is why so many painted Laddu Gopal murtis are made this way rather than in solid marble. It is also the accessible tier: a 9-inch piece weighs around four kilos, so it can be lifted down for shringar without help. One honest caveat about any painted murti: it is wiped clean rather than bathed. Families who perform a full daily abhishek usually keep a small metal Gopal for that, and use a painted piece like this one for darshan and dressing.

## Sizing it for a home mandir

Nine inches is a common working size for a Laddu Gopal who is dressed and attended to every day. It is large enough that the face reads from across a room and that stitched poshak, a mukut and jewellery all fit properly, and small enough to sit on a standard mandir shelf alongside the other murtis instead of crowding them out. Allow roughly a foot of clear height above the plinth so the crown is not lost under the shelf above, and set it where light falls across the face rather than from behind, because painted work flattens when it is lit from the back. Raised on a chowki it gains a few inches and reads as the centre of the mandir; sitting flat on the shelf it settles in as one of the household.

## Make it yours

Every piece is made to order, so size, plinth and paint scheme are decisions rather than defaults. The same Navaneeta form can be made larger for a room-scale mandir, left unpainted in natural white marble dust, cut in Makrana or Vietnam white marble, or painted in a quieter palette if the mandir is already colourful. We design it with you, brief the sculptors and painters we work with, and follow it through to your door. Message us on WhatsApp with the shelf height you are working to.
