## The Mahad swaroop

Varadvinayak is the Ganpati of Mahad, a village in Raigad district that sits on the old road down from Pune into the Konkan, and one halt on the Ashtavinayak circuit of eight. Varad means a boon, so the name reads as the Vinayak who grants what is asked of him. The temple's own account holds that the murti was recovered from the lake behind the shrine and installed where it stands today, and Mahad is one of the few sanctums where a visitor may step inside and offer worship at the murti themselves rather than from the threshold. The detail that fixes the swaroop is the trunk: at Mahad it turns to the deity's own left. That is what this 12-inch piece follows. The trunk curls to his left, reading across to your right as you stand in front of him, above a rounded potbelly and a single broken right tusk.

## Shendur, and what it covers

Shendur, the dense orange-red pigment Maharashtrian families have kept on their Ganpati murtis for generations, is what gives this piece its colour. At Mahad the murti carries a thick coat of it, and the darshan people remember is that flat warm vermilion rather than any stone underneath. Here the pigment covers the whole figure: the ears, the trunk, the belly, the folded legs. Against it sit silver-white eyes, a three-line white tilak with a round orange bindu at the brow, gold on the mukut and on the armlets and necklace, and a red-and-gold vastra over the shoulders. The plinth is deliberately left unpainted, so the natural cast white runs under the colour and the mushak carved at the foot stays legible. Repainting is normal practice in a home mandir over the years, and this surface takes a fresh coat without trouble.

## Cast marble dust at this size

Marble dust composite is crushed marble bound in resin, cast in a mould and then hand-finished and painted by the artist families we work with in Jaipur. For a small painted murti it is the sensible material rather than the compromise one. Pigment sits evenly on it because the surface has none of the translucency that makes quarried white marble fight a heavy colour, the cast holds fine detail like the crown florets and the mushak cleanly, and at 12 inches nothing is being asked to carry load. It is not quarried marble and is not sold as such. At arm's length it reads as solid stone; close up the grain is finer and more even than a quarried block, with a faint speckle of calcite through it. The piece weighs about 6 kg, heavy enough to feel settled on a shelf.

## Sizing it for a home mandir

At 12 inches tall, roughly 6 inches across and 5 deep, this Varadvinayak is built for a pooja shelf rather than a floor. Measure the shelf depth before ordering: with 5 inches of body plus the projecting plinth, it wants about 8 inches of clear depth so the murti is not sitting flush at the front edge. Ganpati is usually placed facing east or west in a home mandir, with room at one side for a diya, and the piece was designed around exactly that kind of setting: a garland alongside and a lamp burning beside it. Households collecting the Ashtavinayak rarely order all eight at once. Most build the set over a few years, and keeping the size and the finish consistent from the first murti onward is what makes the group hold together later.

## Make it yours

Everything here is made to order. The same swaroop can be cast from 9 to 24 inches, left in plain natural white instead of shendur, or given a heavier gold treatment on the mukut and jewellery, and the other seven Ashtavinayak forms can be matched to it. Send us a photo of your mandir shelf on WhatsApp and we will work the size out with you, brief the family who casts and paints it, and follow the piece through to your door.
