Here the face, hair and blouse are left in the natural stone under a satin polish, while the pallu is hand-painted a deep red with a gold border, so the colour reads as drapery rather than as paint laid over a person. Full polychrome, including a painted skin tone, is equally possible if that is closer to the photograph your family remembers. ## Where an 18-inch bust sits At 18 inches the head is close to life-size, and the portrait reads properly from about two metres away.
