Ajitnath Bhagwan is the second of the twenty-four Tirthankars. He was born at Ayodhya to King Jitashatru and Queen Vijaya of the Ikshvaku line, and named for what the tradition says of him: the unconquered, the one no passion could get the better of. Twenty-one inches is the height at which that stillness starts to hold a room. It is taller than a shelf murti and smaller than a pratishtha installation: the size a family derasar is usually built around, where the murti sits at or slightly above the eye of someone seated before it.

The stone is Makrana white marble, the same quarry that has supplied Jain derasars in Rajasthan and Gujarat for centuries. It is a brilliant neutral white with the faintest cream undertone and a compact crystalline grain, and it takes a fine chisel without crumbling at the edge. That matters here, because almost everything that identifies Ajitnath is small work. The srivatsa on the bare chest, the kandora waistband over the kachota pleats, the kundals at the drawn earlobes, the open chakshus eyes and the carved crown are all cut by hand in the Jaipur workshop after the seated mass and the lotus cushion have been brought out of the block.

His canonical complexion in the agamas is gold, not white, so a white marble Ajitnath is a material choice rather than a doctrinal one. It is the choice most derasars make, because white stone reads clearly under lamp light and takes prakshal without staining. The finish is a soft satin rather than a mirror polish, worked up in progressive grades on hand rotators. Satin keeps the carved line legible; a high gloss on a figure this size throws highlights across the face and flattens exactly the detail the carver spent the longest on.

Iconography follows Shvetambar Murtipujak convention throughout: padmasana on a lotus cushion, hands laid flat and stacked in the lap right over left, the gaze drawn to the nose-tip, a plain arched stele behind the head. The elephant, his lanchhana, is carved on the front face of the stepped pedestal, and it is the one mark that tells him apart at a glance from the twenty-three other Jinas, whose posture and attributes are otherwise identical. He attained nirvana at Sammed Shikharji.

Allow roughly fourteen inches of clear width for the pedestal, with a little more on either side for the ashta-prakari pooja articles, and a shelf or chowki that can carry about forty kilos. Each piece is carved to order over eight to twelve weeks, so the height, the stele and the pedestal can all be adjusted, whether that means a taller figure for a community derasar, a blank pedestal face left for a pratishtha inscription, or the same form in a warmer or cooler white. Message us on WhatsApp with your niche dimensions and we will work back from there.
