## The form: a cowherd child with his calf

Bal Gopal is Krishna in his Gokul childhood, and this 15-inch murti carves the cowherd half of that story rather than the flute-playing one. The child sits on a low rock plinth with a small calf settled against his knee, one hand resting on the calf's head and the other raised with a ball of butter. Peacock-feather crown, layered garlands, armlets and anklets, and the small dhoti at the waist that the infant form always wears. There is no flute anywhere on the piece: a flute would turn it into the adult Murlidhar Krishna, a different murti with a different place in the mandir. The proportions carry the rest of the identity: a large head, soft rounded limbs, a child's rounded belly. The calf stays small and reclining, so the child remains the presiding figure and the scene reads as Gokul rather than as a cow with a rider.

## Why Makrana white marble

Makrana comes out of the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, quarried there for centuries and best known as the stone of the Taj Mahal. At this scale it earns its place on two counts. It takes fine detail without crumbling. The beaded chains of a garland, the ridged spine of a peacock feather and the separate toes on a child's foot all hold their edge. And it ages honestly: Makrana is a dense, low-porosity calcite marble that keeps its bright natural white through years of diya smoke and daily abhishek instead of yellowing. The finish is a soft satin polish, which settles into a quiet glow in lamplight rather than the hard reflection a mirror polish gives. Fine grey hairline veins run through the block in places, as they do in any natural Makrana piece. They are a mark of the stone, not a flaw in the carving.

## A 15-inch murti in a home mandir

Fifteen inches is a working size for a domestic mandir: tall enough to be the presiding murti on the middle shelf, short enough that the shelf above still clears the crown. Allow roughly 10 inches of width, because the calf sits beside the child rather than behind him, and about 8 inches of depth including the moulded circular base. At around 12 kilograms it is a two-person lift into place, and it wants a chowki or shelf that is genuinely load-bearing rather than a bracketed ledge. Traditional placement puts the mandir on the north-east side of the home, with the murti facing west or east so that the person doing puja turns towards the sunrise. Keep diyas and incense at the base and in front of the murti, never above the crown.

## Made to order, and what you can change

Every piece is carved to order by the master sculptors we work with in Jaipur, so 15 inches is a starting point rather than a fixed size. The same Bal Gopal and calf composition is regularly made from about 9 inches for a compact pooja shelf up to roughly 30 inches for a larger temple room. The base can change with it, so the rock plinth can become a plain moulded pedestal, a lotus base, or a carved singhasan. Crown and jewellery can be picked out in 22k gold leaf if you want the shringar to read from across the room, and the whole murti can be carved in Vietnam white marble, black stone or Dholpur pink sandstone instead. Send us your shelf dimensions on WhatsApp and we will work the proportions back from there.
