## The earth-touching gesture, and how to recognise it

Bhumisparsha is the one moment Buddhist sculpture returns to more often than any other. Seated beneath the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya, on the night of his awakening, the Buddha lowers his right hand past his knee and touches the ground, calling the earth itself to witness that the realisation is his to claim. This 24-inch piece is arranged entirely around that instant. The right arm falls long and straight over the right knee until the fingertips meet the pedestal; the left hand stays open and flat in the lap, palm turned upward, completely still.

Two hands doing opposite things, one reaching down and one at rest, is what separates bhumisparsha from an ordinary meditation seat, and it is the detail worth checking on any statue sold under this name. The rest of the iconography follows the canon: the ushnisha rising from the crown, elongated earlobes, the urna between the brows, a plain monastic robe over the left shoulder with the right shoulder left bare, and no crown or jewellery of any kind, which would make the figure a bodhisattva rather than the Buddha.

## Makrana white marble, and why the polish stops short of mirror

The stone is Makrana marble from the quarries of Nagaur district in Rajasthan, the same belt that supplied the Taj Mahal and a stone that has been worked continuously for centuries. It is calcitic, dense and unusually low in porosity, which is why it holds a crisp edge on a fingertip or an eyelid and why it ages slowly indoors.

This piece is finished to a soft satin polish rather than a mirror. On a face at this scale, a full mirror polish throws hard specular highlights across the cheek and brow and flattens the expression the carving works hardest to hold; the satin surface reads as an inner glow instead, which suits a seated figure meant to be looked at for a long time. Fine grey hairline veins run through the white. They are the signature of genuine Makrana stone, not a defect, and no two blocks carry the same pattern.

## Living with a 24-inch murti

At 24 inches tall, roughly 16 inches across the lotus base and 12 inches deep, this belongs on a low altar, a console, or a built-in alcove. It should never go on the floor, which the tradition treats as a matter of respect rather than taste. It weighs about 52 kg, so the surface underneath has to be genuinely load-bearing: a solid wood chest, a masonry ledge or a stone plinth, not a hollow shelf or a glass top.

Keep it indoors or under a properly covered verandah. Makrana marble is not a weathering stone, and monsoon rain will dull a satin polish over a few seasons. Day to day it needs almost nothing: a dry soft cloth, and no acidic or abrasive cleaner near the surface.

## Make it yours

Every piece here is made to your brief. Height, the depth of the lotus base, the finish, and the treatment of the robe folds can all move; a 24-inch bhumisparsha Buddha is a common shrine scale, but the same form is carved smaller for a compact pooja room and considerably larger for a hall or a garden pavilion. We design the piece with you, brief the master sculptors we work with in Jaipur, and follow it through to delivery at your door.

A commission of this kind takes 8 to 12 weeks, depending on the size and the level of detail you settle on. If your date is tighter than that, tell us early. There may already be a carved piece with the sculptors we work with, and we will ask and send you photographs of the actual statue before you decide.
