## Abhaya mudra, the oldest gesture, in Makrana marble

Abhaya mudra is the oldest gesture in Buddhist iconography: the right hand raised, palm outward, fingers together. It means do not be afraid. On a statue placed near a doorway or at the head of a path, it is a gesture aimed at whoever is arriving, which is why this form is so often chosen for a threshold rather than a shrine interior.

The stone is Makrana white marble, quarried in Rajasthan and the same stone used for the Taj Mahal. It is dense and fine-calcitic, with a brilliant natural white, subtle fine veining, and a slight translucency at thin edges where light passes a little way into the stone before returning. Left with a soft matte surface, it keeps chisel lines and robe folds honest. Makrana takes a high polish easily, and choosing not to apply one is what keeps the carving visible.

## An 18-inch Buddha in a small garden, and commissioning yours

At 18 inches this is a piece for a small courtyard, an entry garden, a windowsill niche, or a meditation corner, somewhere it will be encountered close up, since the detail rewards proximity. It suits sheltered outdoor placement with routine care; marble in an exposed position over many years will want an occasional wash and a check that it is not sitting in standing water.

Every piece is made to order. This one is carved for you by the master sculptors we work with in Jaipur. We develop the design with you, brief the sculptor, and follow it through to delivery at your door. The abhaya form is ordered at every scale, from a 9-inch desk piece to over life size for a garden, and in Vietnam white marble or black stone. Tell us the setting and we will quote it.
