**Business:** Tilak Mandirwala — made-to-order marble temples (mandirs), statues and decorative handicrafts. Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. Founded 2006.
**How it works:** Each piece is carved to order by the independent master sculptors TMW works with in Jaipur's Khajane Walon Ka Rasta sculptors' market. TMW designs the piece with the customer, briefs the sculptor, and follows it through to delivery and installation.
**Pricing:** request-for-quote — pieces are custom, so the site carries no list prices.
**Ships:** across India; export enquiries welcome.
**About the image:** a design visualisation, not a photograph of stock on hand. The piece is carved to order after the design is agreed.
**Availability:** made to order.

## Carved from photographs, in clay first

A portrait bust is the one commission where the customer already knows exactly what the finished piece has to look like, so the work runs backwards from the face. You send photographs of the person, ideally four or five: front on, both three-quarter angles, one profile, and one that catches how he actually held his head. The sculptors we work with build the likeness in clay at full size first, then send back pictures of the clay from those same angles. No stone is opened until you have looked at that model and said it is him. A correction at the clay stage costs nothing; a correction in marble is not a correction at all, it is a second block. That order of work is the whole reason a portrait in stone can be trusted to a photograph.

## The safa, the moustache, the achkan

Half of a Rajasthani elder's likeness sits above his eyebrows. This one wears a tightly wound safa tied the way it is tied across Marwar and around Jaipur, with a fan of stiff pleats standing above the crown and a long tail left loose to fall over one shoulder. The cloth is cut band by band so the folds cross and overlap instead of reading as one smooth cap, and each pleat of the fan is separated by hand. Below it: a heavy moustache turned up at the ends, deep lines across the forehead and at the outer corners of the eyes, and the plain standing collar of an achkan closed with three buttons. Those four things (tying style, moustache, lines, collar) are what a family recognises from across a room, so they are settled in the brief before the block is opened.

## Makrana white marble for a face

Makrana comes out of the Nagaur district of Rajasthan and has been quarried there for centuries; it is the stone of the Taj Mahal, and it stays the default for portrait work for a practical reason rather than a sentimental one. The grain is fine, crystalline and compact, so a detail as small as an eyelid rim or the corner of a lip holds its edge instead of crumbling under the chisel, and light travels a little way into the surface before coming back out, which is what stops carved skin from reading as plaster. This bust is finished to a soft satin polish rather than a mirror. A mirror surface on a face throws hard highlights that flatten the modelling of a cheek; satin keeps the tool work legible and lets the faint grey hairline veining sit quietly behind it.

## Where a memorial portrait belongs

At 21 inches the bust reads a little under life size, chest up and about the height of a table lamp, and the plain rectangular plinth is carved from the same block, so it sits straight onto a console, a bookshelf or a low pedestal with no separate mount. Keep it at or above chest height with a plain wall behind it, because a busy background fights the modelling in the face. One placement note matters more than the rest: a portrait of a family elder is not a murti. Hindu practice honours ancestors but keeps them apart from the deities, so a piece like this belongs in an entrance hall, a study, a dedicated memorial corner or a garden chhatri. It never goes on the pooja shelf and never inside a mandir.

## Making it yours

The specification above is a starting point, not a fixed catalogue item. The same bust is carved in black marble or Vietnam white marble when a family wants a darker or a cooler stone, and it can be hand-painted (skin tones, a coloured safa, the achkan in the shade he actually wore), which is what most families choose when the photographs are in colour. The height moves up or down, and the plinth can carry a name, two dates or a line in Devanagari. Send us the pictures you have and we will come back with what the sculptors can work from.
