## The form

A ghar derasar built for a single mulnayak: one gokhla, closed by two hinged carved doors that swing back on visible brass hinges so the sanctum can be shut between darshan. The gabhara floor carries a shallow prakshal channel, cut so abhishek water runs clear of the pedestal instead of pooling beneath the murti. A carved circular siddhachakra medallion sits above the cusped door arch, and the frieze of the eight ashtamangal runs across the lintel below it. A tiered shikhar rises over the sanctum to a kalash finial, and the whole shrine stands on a stepped plinth with a carved lotus-petal band. At 21 inches this is a tabletop derasar, sized for a shelf, a console top or the upper deck of a pooja cabinet rather than for the floor.

## Why this one is painted

Carved and left white, the eight ashtamangal are eight shallow relief panels, and at arm's length they read as texture rather than as eight distinct symbols. Painted, each one becomes legible from across the room: the swastika in red, the shrivatsa and nandyavarta picked out in gold, the paired fish in blue and green, then the mirror, the water-pot, the throne and the powder-vase, one to a panel across the lintel. Floral scrollwork in the same palette runs up the corner pillars and into the arch spandrels, and a thin gilded line follows the cusp of the arch. The shikhar above is deliberately left in plain white stone, so the colour holds together as a single band at eye level instead of spreading across the whole shrine.

## The stone, the carving and the colour

Makrana white marble comes out of the Nagaur belt in Rajasthan, and it is the stone of the Dilwara temples and of the Taj Mahal. It is dense and low in porosity, holds a crisp arris on a frieze this small, and stays white rather than yellowing with age, which matters on a piece where painted colour sits directly against bare stone. The shrine is cut and carved by hand by the independent master sculptors this workshop commissions in Jaipur: rough block, primary form, then the fine work on the ashtamangal panels, the pierced door tracery and the siddhachakra roundel, finished to a honed matte so the surface reads as stone and not as glass. The colour goes on after the stone is finished, panel by panel, with the gilded lines laid in last.

## Living with it

Twenty-one inches tall by about thirteen wide, roughly 27 kg, and deep enough at nine inches to take a small mulnayak with the doors closing over it, so it wants a solid shelf rather than a floating one, with clearance either side for the doors to open fully and a hand's width of headroom above the kalash. It is usually set against a north or east wall of the pooja room. A single low-wattage warm light placed above and in front lifts the painted frieze without flattening the carving. The derasar is supplied without a murti, so the mulnayak can be chosen separately. Dust it dry with a soft cloth; keep the painted surfaces away from scrubbing and standing water, and let abhishek water run off through the prakshal channel.

## Making it yours

The same form is made from about 18 inches up to 36, with a wider two- or three-gokhla sanctum where more than one murti is installed, and with the ashtamangal left plain-carved, inlaid or gold-leafed instead of painted if the colour is not wanted. The palette itself can be shifted, and a family name can be engraved into the plinth band for a pratishtha gift. Send the shelf width, depth and headroom over WhatsApp and a drawing comes back against those numbers.
