## The stone

Makrana white marble comes out of the Nagaur belt in Rajasthan, roughly 350 km from the Jaipur studios where a derasar like this one is shaped. It is a dense, low-porosity calcite marble, which is the practical reason Indian shrine work has leaned on it for six centuries: a carved edge holds its crispness instead of powdering away, and a jali panel can be cut thin without going brittle. The colour is a bright natural white carrying the faintest warm undertone, nearer cream than the blue-white of Carrara. Fine grey hairline veins drift through it. Those are the stone's signature rather than a defect, and no two derasars carry the same pattern. Finished honed, the surface reads matte and soft under a pooja-room lamp instead of throwing hard reflections back at you, and it takes daily washing and handling without losing that quality.

## The shikharbandhi top

A shikharbandhi derasar is one that carries a true spire over the sanctum, and that is what gives this piece its height and its silhouette. The tiered shikhar rises in stepped courses above the gabhara, gathers into a rounded amalaka, and finishes in a kalash finial with a dhwaja flagstaff standing above it. It is the same sequence a full-sized Shvetambar derasar in Gujarat or Rajasthan follows, scaled down to a family's pooja room. Across the lintel runs a frieze of the eight ashtamangal: the swastika with its three dots and the crescent siddhashila above, the shrivatsa, the nandyavarta, the paired fish, the mirror, the water-pot, the bhadrasana throne and the vardhamanaka powder-vase. A carved siddhachakra medallion sits directly over the door arch. The iconography is Jain throughout, with nothing borrowed and nothing generic.

## Inside the gabhara

The sanctum is enclosed, not open, which is the distinction most families ask about first. Two carved doors hang on brass hinges and swing clear of the pillars, jali-cut so a little light reaches the murti even when they are shut for the night. Cut into the sanctum floor is a shallow prakshal channel that drains forward, so water from the daily abhishek runs out cleanly instead of standing against the stone. The single gokhla is proportioned for one seated Tirthankar murti of roughly seven to nine inches: Adinath, Mahavir, Parshvanath or whichever pratima a family already keeps. The derasar is made without a murti inside; the pratima is chosen and installed separately, which is how most households prefer to do it.

## Sizing it for a home pooja room

At 24 inches tall, about 14 wide and 10 deep, this is a derasar meant to sit on a chowki, a marble platform or a built-in shelf rather than on the floor. That height keeps the gokhla close to eye level for someone seated, which matters during daily darshan. Allow a hand's width on either side so the doors can open fully, and a wall behind it rather than a corner. The weight works out near 32 kg, well inside what a solid wooden chowki or a stone slab will take in an apartment or a suburban house abroad. Dimensions, the width of the gokhla, the ashtamangal arrangement and an engraved family name along the plinth can all be adjusted. Message on WhatsApp with the space you have and the murti you intend to install.
