## Who Jalaram Bapa is, and what this murti shows

Jalaram Bapa (1799 to 1881) lived at Virpur in Saurashtra, where he kept a sadavrat: an open kitchen that fed anyone who walked in and never asked who they were. That is why his image sits in so many Gujarati homes: he is remembered less for miracles than for feeding people. This 12-inch murti shows him standing with both palms joined at the chest in namaskar, greeting the household rather than waiting to be greeted by it. The cloth jholi hangs at his side and the wooden danda stands upright beside him. These are the two objects at the centre of the Virpur story, and the ones still kept and venerated at the shrine there. At this scale the piece is meant for daily darshan on a shelf, not for a hall.

## The stone

Makrana white marble comes out of the quarries at Makrana, in Nagaur district, Rajasthan, the same belt that supplied the Taj Mahal, which is why Rajasthani sculptors have worked this stone for centuries. It is a dense, fine-grained calcite marble: bright neutral white with a faint cream undertone, threaded with grey hairline veins thin enough to read as stone rather than as pattern. The surface on this murti is taken to a soft satin polish, the finish most families ask for on a pooja-room piece, because it holds a gentle glow under a diya or a shelf light instead of throwing a hard reflection back at you. Makrana also holds fine detail without crumbling at the edges, which matters on a figure carrying a beard, folded palms and turban wraps at only 12 inches.

## Reading the iconography

Getting Jalaram Bapa right matters, because he is routinely confused with other bearded sants. Look for the wound Kathiawadi turban, the long full beard reaching the chest, and the upper body fully covered by a long-sleeved kediyu worn over a dhoti. On the forehead sits the U-shaped Vaishnav tilak, and a tulsi kanthi rests at the throat; both mark his Vaishnav lineage under his guru Bhojal Ram. What you should not see is a cloth knotted over one shoulder, a single-piece kafni robe, a short cropped beard or a bare torso; those belong to a different figure entirely. The sculptors we work with cut these markers deliberately, because they are what a Gujarati household checks first when a murti comes out of the crate.

## Sizing it for a home mandir

At 12 inches tall on a roughly 5-inch square plinth, this murti is scaled for a household mandir shelf or a wall niche rather than a floor position. It weighs about 5 kg, so an ordinary marble or hardwood shelf carries it without extra bracing. Allow at least 6 inches of shelf depth, though, since the carved base and the danda together need more footprint than the figure alone suggests. A standing form reads best when the face sits near eye level for someone seated, which usually means a shelf around 3.5 to 4 feet up. This is also the size most often chosen as a Jalaram Jayanti or housewarming gift, because it travels and installs with no fitting work.

## Making it yours

Everything here is made to order, so size, stone and finish are all open. This murti can be scaled up for a larger mandir, cut in Vietnam white marble for a cooler white, or taken to a mirror polish instead of satin. A plain or moulded plinth can be swapped in, and a family name or a date engraved on the base for a gifting piece. Tell us what you have in mind and we will work it through with you and brief the sculptor.
