## The stone

Makrana marble is quarried in Nagaur district, Rajasthan, from the same beds that supplied the Taj Mahal and the Dilwara temples, and it has stayed the default stone for Indian murti work for six centuries. It is a dense calcite marble, low in porosity, and it takes a satin polish without turning glassy. At 12 inches that density matters more than it would at three feet: the fingers, the anklet beads and the flower garland are each carved at a few millimetres, and a coarser stone would crumble at that scale. Makrana also glows faintly at thin edges instead of reading flat, because light penetrates a short way into the calcite before it scatters back. The grey hairline veining runs sparse enough that it never cuts across the face. This murti is left in its natural white, with a soft satin polish on the skin and the drapery.

## The form: Bal Gopal with the butter pot

Krishna appears here in the Navaneeta or Makhan Chor form, as an infant caught mid-theft with a ball of butter in his raised hand and the pot still open beside him. The proportions are deliberately those of a child, with a large head, soft rounded limbs and a small dhoti gathered at the waist under a jewelled belt. He sits on a carved singhasan whose arched prabhavali is pierced with scrollwork and whose pillars end in turned finials, so the murti arrives with its own throne rather than needing a separate stand. The peacock-feather crest above the crown and the butter pot at his side are the two marks that identify him. There is no flute: the flute belongs to the adult Murlidhar form and would make this a different murti altogether. The face carries the half-smile that Janmashtami households look for.

## The gold-leaf shringar

The shringar on this murti is genuine gold leaf, laid by hand over the crown, the aureole behind it, the necklaces, the armlets and anklets, the waist belt and the rim of the butter pot. Gilding is a finishing craft in its own right and a separate pair of hands from the carving. The surface is sealed and burnished before the leaf goes down, then the leaf is pressed into the beading so the ornament reads as metal against stone rather than as paint. Because it follows the carved relief exactly, the detail underneath stays legible and nothing is thickened or filled in. Kept dry and dusted with a soft brush, gold leaf holds its colour indefinitely. If you would rather have the piece in plain white marble, or in traditional polychrome colouring instead, that is a straightforward change at the design stage.

## Sizing it for your mandir

At 12 inches tall on a base about 6 inches wide and 5 deep, this Laddu Gopal sits in the band most home mandirs are actually built around. It clears a standard 15-inch shelf with room for a thali and diyas on either side, and at roughly 8 kg it can be lifted and bathed for abhishek without help. That matters here more than for most murtis: Laddu Gopal is treated as a child of the house rather than an icon kept at a distance, so families dress him, swing him and put him to bed. A piece at this scale allows all of that, where a three-foot statue does not. For a larger pooja room, or a family shrine that has to read from across the room, the same design carries well up to 24 inches. East- or north-facing placement is the usual choice.

## Make it yours

Every piece is made to order. We work out the design with you, including the size, the stone, how much of the shringar is gilded and whether the plinth carries a family name, then brief the master sculptors we work with in Jaipur and follow the murti through carving, gilding and delivery to your door. Send a photo of your mandir and we will tell you what scale sits right in it.
