## The jhula, and why the seat is empty
A jhula is a swing, and in a Braj household it is where the infant Krishna is set down and rocked through the day. That is the hindola seva that fills the temples of Vrindavan and Mathura through Sawan and again at Janmashtami. This one is carved as furniture rather than as a murti. Two turned pillars rise from a single marble footing, a crossbeam spans them, and a shikhar spire climbs above it to a kalash finial, the same silhouette a Nagara-style mandir carries over its sanctum. The seat hangs below on four slim brass chains and is left deliberately bare: no infant is carved into it, no figure rests on it. That is the whole point of the piece. The Laddu Gopal you already keep at home, the one that gets dressed, fed and put to sleep, moves into the seat and stays the centre of it.

## Gold leaf on white Makrana marble
The frame is cut from Makrana marble, quarried in Nagaur district in Rajasthan and the stone the Taj Mahal was faced in. It takes a soft satin polish that holds light without throwing a hard reflection, which is the right register for something that stands in front of a lamp or a row of diyas. Gold leaf is laid over three elements only: the shikhar spire, the kalash finial, and the carved band that runs along the seat apron. Everything else stays plain white stone, because the contrast is what makes the gilding read at all; gilding the whole frame would flatten it. The chains are brass, sourced and fitted rather than cast in the workshop, chosen so the metal reads warm and golden against the white. The pillars, the spire and the apron band are carved and finished by hand in Jaipur.

## Sizing it for your Laddu Gopal
At 20 inches to the tip of the finial, the jhula is built around a seat that takes a Laddu Gopal murti in the familiar No. 5 to No. 8 range, roughly 6 to 8 inches tall. That is the size most households already own, so the swing arrives ready for the murti rather than the other way round. The footprint is about 11 inches across and 7 deep, which clears a standard mandir shelf without crowding the thali, the bell and the lamp that usually share it. It weighs close to 10 kilograms: heavy enough to sit still while the seat is rocked, light enough for one person to lift and reposition. If your murti sits outside that band, the seat and the crossbeam are re-proportioned around it rather than the whole piece being scaled up, so the chains still hang true.

## Where it stands, and how to keep it
In a home mandir the jhula usually goes to one side of the main shelf rather than at its centre, so the murti can be lifted in and out without moving anything else. It works the same way on a console table or an alcove ledge in a pooja room, and at Janmashtami it is often the piece that gets dressed, with a garland over the crossbeam and a small cloth on the seat. Marble takes a stain from turmeric, kumkum and ghee if they are left to sit, so wipe spills the same day with a damp cloth and dry the surface; nothing abrasive, no acidic cleaner. The gold leaf is surface-laid, so clean around it rather than over it. The brass chains dull to a soft patina and come back with a dry cloth. The jhula ships seated in a fitted presentation box.

## Making it yours
The seat can be sized up or down for a different murti, the gold leaf swapped for silver leaf or dropped altogether for plain carved stone, and the spire simplified to a flat crossbeam if you want a lower profile on the shelf. Vietnam white marble is available in place of Makrana. Tell us the murti you are working around and the shelf it has to sit on, and the proportions are set from there.
