## An empty seat, on purpose

Most marble jhulas sold for a home mandir arrive with the child Krishna already carved into the swing, which settles the question of who sits there before the buyer has any say in it. This one does not. The seat is a bare, flat platform of Makrana marble, its edges softened and its top left plain, so that the Laddu Gopal already kept in the house (the one that gets dressed, fed and put to sleep every day) is the murti that goes into it. Four slender brass chains carry the seat down from the crossbeam, and the swing moves the way a jhula should: a short, slow arc rather than a rattle. Everything else on the piece, from the four pillars and the domed roof with its kalash finial to the stepped plinth, is carved and finished around that deliberate vacancy.

## Silver worked over Makrana stone

Makrana marble is quarried in the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, from beds worked for centuries and drawn on for the Taj Mahal. It is dense and close-grained, and it takes a satin polish without turning glassy. Here it carries the dome, the seat and the stepped base, all left as bare stone so the grain and the hairline veining stay visible. The four corner pillars and the top crossbeam are wrapped in silver sheet, embossed in repoussé with a repeating floral punch by a chandi-kaam specialist and fitted over the carved stone core. The silver is sourced ready-worked and mounted onto the stone, a separate trade from the carving. The contrast is the point: worked silver at eye level, quiet white stone above and below it. The marble is what the piece is made of; the silver is a skin over it.

## Sizing it for your Laddu Gopal

The jhula stands 18 inches tall overall, roughly 12 inches wide and 8 inches deep across the base, and the seat is cut for a murti in the 5 to 7 inch range, about No. 4 to No. 6 in the sizes most households keep. That covers the everyday Laddu Gopal that gets dressed by season, not a large festival murti. Measure yours before ordering, and measure the height that matters: from the base of the murti to the top of its mukut, since the crossbeam sets the ceiling. On a mandir shelf the piece wants about 14 inches of depth and a clear span above the dome so the roof is not crowded. It weighs around 9 kg, heavy enough to stay put once the swing is set moving.

## Where it sits, and how to keep it

A jhula this size belongs on the main shelf of a home mandir or on a console beside it, at a height where the seat sits near eye level for someone seated during aarti. It sees the most use in the weeks around Janmashtami, when the Laddu Gopal is bathed, dressed and placed in the swing, though many families leave it standing with the murti in it all year. Keep it out of direct sun and away from any window that takes rain-splash. A soft dry cloth is enough for the marble. For the silver, dry-dust it the same way and use a jeweller's silver cloth once or twice a year on the tarnish that settles into the embossing. Liquid silver polish stains marble, so keep it off the stone entirely.

## Making it yours

The same pavilion is made in other sizes when the murti is larger or the shelf is shallower, and the seat can be cut wider without changing the proportions of the frame. The cladding is a choice as well: gold-toned sheet in place of the silver, or the pillars left as plain carved marble for a quieter piece. Chains can be swapped for a heavier gauge, and the front step of the base can carry an engraved family name. Message us on WhatsApp with your murti's height and the shelf you have in mind.
