## Why the block matters at nine inches

The lion-flanked throne is what makes the Lalbaug Ganpati recognisable at a glance, and here it is compressed into a nine-inch block of Makrana white marble, the stone quarried at Makrana in Rajasthan's Nagaur district and used to face the Taj Mahal. At this size the stone matters more, not less: a small piece leaves nowhere to hide a coarse grain or a wandering vein, so the block is picked for even, close crystal and a clean natural white that holds its brightness under office light rather than yellowing against dark wood.

## How the desk murti is carved in Jaipur

Carving happens in Jaipur, in the studios of the independent master sculptors Tilak Mandirwala works with. The block is roughed down to the seated silhouette, the throne and stepped plinth are squared true, and only then does the detail work begin: the beading on the mukut, the layered necklaces, the lions' manes, the drapery folds falling across the knee. Faces, hands and the trunk are finished entirely by hand; no machine tool touches them. The satin polish is raised progressively so the marble keeps its grain instead of flattening into a glassy sheen.

## The Lalbaugcha Raja markers held at desk scale

Devotees know this form from the Lalbaug pandal in Mumbai, where a Ganpati seated on a simhasan (a throne flanked by lions) has been installed every Ganeshotsav since 1934, and where he is addressed as Navasacha Ganpati, the Ganpati of vows. Every canonical marker is carried through at reduced scale: four arms, one cradling a modak and one raised in abhaya; the single broken right tusk; the trunk curling to his left; the mushak resting at the foot of the plinth. Mukut and ornaments are scaled down in proportion so the face still leads and does not disappear under decoration.

## Where a 9-inch murti sits, and other stones

Nine inches is deliberately the smallest format in this group, sized for a desk corner, a shop counter, a reception ledge or a car dashboard, where a full mandir murti would never fit. Keep it raised on the desk, a chowki or a shelf rather than at floor level, and leave a hand's width of clear space around the plinth so the lions and the throne outline stay legible. Placed so it faces north or east is the common preference for a Ganpati kept at a work desk.

Sizes run upward from here to full mandir scale, and the same form is carved in Vietnam white marble, jet-black marble, or with the mukut and ornaments finished in 22k gold leaf. Plinths can be engraved with a family or firm name for Ganesh Chaturthi gifting. Message us on WhatsApp with the size and finish you have in mind.
