## The Makrana marble and the Mahishasura Mardini form

Mahishasura Mardini is the form in which Durga is most often carved, and this 36-inch piece takes the whole narrative out of a single block of Makrana white marble. Makrana comes from the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, quarried there for centuries and the stone chosen for the Taj Mahal. It is a compact, crystalline white that holds a fine edge without crumbling. That density is what lets a sculptor cut the goddess's many arms, a lion's mane and the demon's contorted figure out of one mass and still keep every element structurally sound.

## How the Durga murti is carved in Jaipur

Work begins in Jaipur with a rough cut that establishes the goddess's stride and the diagonal of the trishul. The master sculptors we commission then block the lion and the demon, drill the negative space between the arms with fine points, and only afterwards move to detail: the pleats of the sari, the beaded ornaments, the individual curls of the mane. Faces, hands and drapery are never machine-finished; they are cut and rubbed by hand through progressively finer abrasives until the satin polish arrives.

## The Devi Mahatmya episode, and where it stands

The Devi Mahatmya describes the goddess assembled from the combined light of all the gods to end Mahishasura, the buffalo demon no man could kill. Sculptors render the decisive instant: the trishul driven downward, the demon emerging from the buffalo form at her feet, the lion springing forward at her side. Her weapons (sword, chakra, bow) are gifts from the individual devas. What keeps the image devotional rather than violent is her face, composed and compassionate throughout; the subdued demon at the base follows the same convention as Apasmara beneath Nataraja's foot.

At 36 inches on its plinth, the murti reads as the presiding figure of a temple sanctum or a dedicated pooja room rather than a shelf piece. Allow roughly two feet of clear wall behind it so the raised arms and the mukut are not visually crowded. North Indian households traditionally install her facing east or north, and this is the natural centrepiece for Navratri, when the nine nights of worship are directed to exactly this victory. A raised chowki or stone pedestal keeps her at eye level, as convention asks.

## Other sizes, stones and a plinth inscription

Sizes from tabletop through life-size can be cut to order, and the same composition can be carved in Vietnam white marble or a darker granite if the room calls for contrast. Families commissioning the piece for a temple installation often ask for an inscription on the plinth face. Message us on WhatsApp with your dimensions and we will work back from there.
