## The set

An 8-inch shagun thali and a small lidded coin vessel, fitted together into one boxed set. The thali is cut from a single block of Makrana white marble, its rim shaped into a scalloped edge and bordered with a hand-set floral inlay, while the well in the middle is left plain so an envelope, a coconut or a handful of dry fruit sits flat on it. The companion vessel is a squat round box roughly three inches across, hollowed to take coins and a folded note, with a turned brass finial fitted to the centre of its lid to lift it by. Both pieces drop into a die-cut insert inside a rigid red presentation case, so the set arrives ready to hand over rather than ready to wrap.

## Makrana marble and the inlay

Makrana marble comes out of the quarries in Nagaur district, Rajasthan (the same stone that faces the Taj Mahal), and it is why a piece this small still has weight in the hand. It is dense and fine-grained, a warm-leaning white with grey hairline veining, and it holds a satin polish that stays soft under a room's lighting instead of throwing hard reflections. The floral border is parchin kari, the Agra and Jaipur inlay tradition: shaped slivers of carnelian and malachite are set into recesses chiselled into the marble by hand, then ground back flush, so the pattern is felt as one continuous surface rather than as something laid on top of the stone.

## Using it at a shagun

Shagun is the moment money changes hands as a blessing rather than as a payment, which is why the amount always ends in a one (101, 501, 1,101) and why it is presented rather than simply handed across. The thali is what carries it: the envelope, a coconut, sweets, dry fruit, sometimes a length of cloth, arranged so the whole thing can be offered with both hands. The lidded vessel takes the loose coins and keeps them from sliding about as the thali moves between people. Because the set is marble rather than steel, it reads as something to keep. The thali sits out on a console or a pooja shelf after the roka or the tilak, and the vessel ends up holding the small everyday things that have nowhere else to live.

## Ordering it for a wedding

Eight inches is the diameter that suits one household's shagun; a wider thali makes sense when it has to be seen across a room, and the vessel can be made deeper if it is meant to hold more than coins. The inlay palette is open. The carnelian-and-malachite border on this set is the traditional one, but the karigars we work with can cut the flowers in a single colour, or leave the border off for a plain scalloped rim. For families and companies ordering in quantity, the boxing can be built to a set count and the vessel base engraved with a name and a date. Tell us the occasion and the number you need, and we will quote the set and its boxing together. A piece may already be carved, in which case there is no carving wait and we will send you photographs of the actual set; a fresh commission runs four to eight weeks.
