## Sherawali, and the Makrana stone

Sherawali, "the one who rides the lion", is the household form of Durga, and this 24-inch murti carves her exactly that way: seated in calm authority with her lion steady beneath her. The stone is Makrana marble from the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, quarried there for centuries and the same stone the Taj Mahal was faced with. Makrana reads a bright neutral white with the faintest cream undertone, and its dense, lightly sugary crystal takes fine detail without crumbling. That is why the mukut filigree, the sari border and the lion's mane hold their edges at this scale.

## How the Sherawali murti is carved

Every piece TMW sells is made to order by the independent master sculptors we work with in Jaipur, and the sequence is the traditional one. A rough block is squared and roughed out, the primary masses of goddess and vahana are established, and then the detail work begins: the weapons, the layered necklaces, the pleats of the sari, the individual locks of the lion's mane. Faces, hands and drapery are never left to machine finishing; they are chiselled and hand-rasped, then brought up through progressive grits to a soft satin polish that keeps the stone's grain readable rather than turning it glassy.

## The Sherawali form, and living with a 24-inch murti

The Sherawali (or Simhavahini) form differs from Mahishasura Mardini, where the goddess is caught mid-strike over the buffalo demon. Here she is at rest and in blessing: multi-armed, carrying the trishul, sword, conch and discus the devas lent her, her forward right hand raised in abhaya mudra, the gesture of fearlessness. The lion is not decoration. It is her vahana and the seat of her authority, which is why North Indian pandal and home imagery almost always shows the two together. The expression is deliberately serene rather than wrathful, the register most families want for a mandir they sit in front of every morning.

At 24 inches this is a mandir murti rather than a floor idol. It sits well on a marble or wooden shrine platform with roughly a foot of clear height above the crown, and at about 19 kg the platform should be solid rather than a wall shelf. Families commission this scale for daily aarti and then dress it for the nine nights of Navratri, when the murti carries a chunri, fresh garlands and a lamp on either side. Front lighting suits it: a warm lamp low and forward keeps the face open and lets the carved halo behind the crown throw a soft shadow.

## Other sizes, stones and gold-leaf work

This Sherawali composition is carved from 9 inches up to temple scale, and in black stone or Vietnam white marble if you want a different tone against your mandir. A base inscription, a gold-leaf mukut, or hand-painted eyes and sari borders can all be added. Message us on WhatsApp with your shrine dimensions and we will work back from there.
