## The inlay

The floral work on this mandir's back panel is parchin kari, the flush stone-inlay craft that Mughal ateliers brought to Agra in the seventeenth century and that Jaipur's inlay families have carried on since. Nothing on the panel is painted. Every leaf, vine and blossom is a separate sliver of coloured stone: green malachite for the foliage, deep blue lapis lazuli for the larger flowers, orange-red carnelian for the smaller buds. Each piece is shaped on a wheel, its outline scribed onto the marble, and a recess chiselled to match it exactly. The stone is bedded in, then the whole panel is ground back until the inlay sits dead level with the marble around it. Run a finger across it and the surface reads as one continuous plane; only the colour tells you where the marble ends and the inlay begins.

## The stone

The mandir is carved from Makrana white marble, quarried at Makrana in Nagaur district, Rajasthan, and best known as the stone of the Taj Mahal. For an inlaid piece that choice is practical as much as aesthetic. Makrana is dense and tight-grained with very low porosity, so a chiselled recess holds a crisp edge instead of crumbling at the lip, which is exactly what flush inlay demands. Its colour is a bright natural white with the faintest warm undertone and only occasional grey hairline veining, so the malachite green and lapis blue read clearly against it rather than fighting a busy field. The marble is taken to a soft satin polish rather than a mirror: enough sheen to catch light along the carved mouldings, matte enough that the inlay colours stay saturated.

## The form

The mandir is built on a single-door plan: one arched opening framed by slender carved pillars, a stepped plinth below, a crested torana above. The arch is a makar-torana: in temple architecture the makara, a mythical water creature, sits at each end of the arch, and the carved scrollwork spills from its mouth, which is why the ends of this canopy curl outward in deep foliate volutes. A carved crest rises at the centre, flanked by turned finials at the corners. The sanctum is left plain and open. Like most marble mandirs, this one ships without a deity. The inner floor is a flat, level shelf sized to take a murti of your own choosing, and the plinth carries its own band of inlaid vine so the base is not left bare beneath the door.

## Sizing it for your space

At 30 inches tall, 14 inches wide and 8 inches deep, this is a console or shelf mandir rather than a floor shrine. It wants a surface at roughly waist to chest height, so the sanctum sits near eye level when you stand before it. Weight is around 45 kg, which a solid wood console carries comfortably and a hollow-core or floating shelf will not. The north-east corner is the established Vastu placement for a home mandir, with the murti set to face west or east so the person praying faces east or north. A warm LED strip tucked behind the arch, out of sight in the shadow line, lights the inlay without glare. Dust it dry, and keep lemon, vinegar and bathroom cleaners off the marble, because acid etches the polish and dulls the ground the inlay sits in.

## Make it yours

Every mandir is made to order, so the dimensions above are a starting point rather than a fixed spec. Change the height, widen the opening for a larger murti, add jali side panels, or ask for a different inlay palette or motif. Makrana white marble, Vietnam white marble, black stone, Dholpur pink sandstone and cast marble dust are all available. We design it with you, brief the sculptor who carves it, and follow the piece through to your door. A family name engraved on the plinth is a common addition when the mandir is a housewarming gift.
