## The Makrana marble and its fine grain

Skandamata is Durga in her mother-form, and this 24-inch murti carries that softness in the stone itself. It is carved from Makrana white marble, quarried in the Nagaur district of Rajasthan. This is the same seam that supplied the Taj Mahal, and still the reference stone for Indian devotional sculpture. Makrana is a dense, fine-grained calcitic marble with a bright natural white body and only faint grey hairline veining, which is why it holds crisp detail in an ornate mukut, a child's fingers, or a lion's mane without the surface going chalky under polish.

## Carving Skandamata, the one Durga form without weapons

Work begins with a rough block roughly a third larger than the finished piece. The sculptor blocks out the mass of the lion and the seated goddess first, then moves to point chisels and drill points for the undercuts: the gap between Skandamata's lap and the child, the space beneath the raised palms, the separation of each lotus petal. Face, hands, drapery and the lion's mane are finished entirely by hand; no machine tooling touches them. Polishing runs through progressively finer grits to a soft satin, which keeps the marble's translucence readable rather than flattening it under a mirror gloss.

In the Navadurga sequence, Skandamata is the fifth form, worshipped on the fifth night of Navratri. Her name means "mother of Skanda" (Kartikeya, the boy-general of the gods), and she is shown holding him on her lap while seated on her lion. She carries four arms here rather than the eight or ten of her Mahishasura Mardini form: two upper hands hold lotuses, one lower arm supports the child, and the remaining right hand is raised in abhaya, the gesture of reassurance. It is the one Durga form where the weapons are set down.

## Where a 24-inch murti sits, and other stones

At 24 inches tall with a 13-inch span across the lion, the murti sits comfortably on a home mandir platform or a dedicated console without crowding the altar. Leave four to five inches of clear space on either side so the lion's profile reads properly, and set the light high and slightly to one side. Makrana takes raking light well, while a hard front-on spot flattens the carving. It works as the centrepiece of a Navratri installation, where it can be dressed and garlanded across the nine nights.

The same Skandamata can be cut in Vietnam white marble for a cooler, brighter white, or scaled up for a larger mandir. Gold-leaf detailing on the crown, ornaments and lotuses is available, as is an inscribed base for a housewarming or naming-ceremony gift. Message us on WhatsApp with your size and stone and we will work through it.
