## The heron on the pedestal

Sumatinath is the fifth of the twenty-four Tirthankaras, and on a Jain murti it is the lanchhana, the small emblem cut into the front face of the pedestal, that says which Tirthankara you are standing before. His is the heron, carved here in shallow relief in the central panel between two miniature pilasters, so the murti names itself at a glance. The Shvetambar account gives him the name for a reason worth knowing: while his mother Mangala carried him, she settled a dispute between two women who each claimed the same child, and the right judgement she showed became his name, su-mati. Tradition places his birth at Ayodhya and gives him a golden complexion. Every other feature on this piece is shared by all twenty-four Jinas; the heron is the one mark that is his alone.

## Makrana marble, and what it does at eleven inches

The stone comes from Makrana in Rajasthan's Nagaur district, about ninety kilometres from the Jaipur workshop, quarried continuously for something close to a thousand years and still the default stone of Jain derasar carving. It is the marble of the Taj Mahal, and in 2019 the International Union of Geological Sciences listed it as a Global Heritage Stone Resource. That recognised a calcite content near 98 percent, which is what gives it a dense, low-porosity body that holds a fine edge instead of crumbling at it. At this size that density matters more than it would on a four-foot piece: a heron carved an inch and a half across, a waistband a few millimetres deep, and eyelids thinner than that all survive only in a stone with no soft seams running through it. The satin polish lets light enter the surface and return from just beneath, so the face reads warm rather than flat.

## What the carve has to get right

This is a Shvetambar Murtipujak murti and every convention on it is fixed. The upper body is bare with the srivatsa diamond at the centre of the chest; a carved kandora waistband sits above the pleated kachota that covers the lower body, the mark that separates a Shvetambar Jina from a Digambar one. The legs are locked in padmasana on a compact lotus base, the hands stacked flat in the lap, right over left, palms open. The eyes are carved prominently open in the chakshus convention, with the gaze set to the nose-tip, and the earlobes are long. None of this is a Buddha: there is no robe, no fold of cloth over a shoulder, no raised or varied mudra. Roughing and the pedestal mouldings are cut with chisel and drill point, and the face, hands and heron are finished entirely by hand with rifflers and progressive abrasives.

## An eleven-inch murti in a ghar derasar

At eleven inches tall, roughly six across and five deep, the murti weighs about seven kilograms. It is light enough for one person to lift into place and set down without a trolley, and small enough to sit on the middle shelf of a household ghar derasar without crowding the cabinet around it. Allow a hand's width of clear space on each side so the pedestal panel and the heron stay readable from a seated position, and place it at or slightly above eye level when you are seated for darshan. The stepped pedestal is flat-bottomed and needs no separate plinth. The satin polish takes abhishek water and milk without staining, provided the stone is wiped dry afterwards; keep acidic substances, including lemon and vinegar-based cleaners, off the surface entirely.

## Commissioning yours

This murti is carved to order in Jaipur, so the size is a starting point rather than a fixed catalogue item; the same form works from nine inches for a cabinet shelf up to a mulnayak scale for a community derasar. It can also be cut in Vietnam white marble for a cooler, more uniform white, or given a carved parikar surround with flanking pilasters and a torana arch. A donor family's name or a pratishtha date can be inscribed along the lower moulding of the pedestal. Message us on WhatsApp with the size and the derasar it is going into.
