## The stone and the inlay

Makrana marble comes out of the quarries in Nagaur district, Rajasthan, the same beds that supplied the Taj Mahal, and it is still the stone Jaipur's inlay workshops work in most often. It is a dense, fine-grained calcite that takes a satin polish without turning glassy and holds a crisp edge, which is what a tray with a raised lip needs. Running inside that lip is a parchin kari border: a floral vine of carnelian, lapis and malachite, each piece cut to shape and set flush into channels chiselled out of the marble by hand. Run a finger across it at a low angle and you should not feel a step between one stone and the next. That flatness is the real test of inlay work. The body of the tray is a single slab, not a frame with a panel dropped into it.

## The cast brass handles

Most marble trays are carried with two hands under the slab, or not carried at all. This one has a small cast brass handle at each short end, shaped as a scrolled leaf and set into the marble on drilled pins, so the pull goes into the stone rather than into a line of adhesive. Brass was chosen over a carved marble grip for an honest reason: marble is weak in tension at that scale, and a loaded 16-inch tray puts real force on a handle. These two are the only metal on the piece; everything else your hand touches is stone. They are left unlacquered, so the brass darkens slowly to a deeper amber the way old door pulls in a Rajasthani haveli do; a minute with a soft cloth brings the shine back.

## Where a 16-inch tray gets used

Sixteen inches crosses a dining table without taking it over, and still carries four glasses and a small bowl. On a bar cart it holds bottles and a pair of tumblers, the raised lip catching drips before they reach the shelf. On a console by the front door it becomes the spot where keys and reading glasses land. In a pooja room it serves as a stand for a diya and a small thali, though the inlay border reads best when the surface is not crowded. It also gives well: useful on the first day, tied to no particular deity or festival, and heavy enough in the hand to explain itself. Allow about 19 inches of clear span, handle to handle.

## Living with marble on a table

Marble is calcium carbonate, so acid etches it. Lemon, vinegar, wine and tomato leave a dull patch that is not a stain and will not wipe away. On a serving tray that matters more than it would on a statue, so the working rule is simple: wipe spills as they happen, and use the tray for closed bottles, glasses, dry snacks and served plates rather than as a cutting surface. Clean it with a damp cloth and a pH-neutral soap, never a bathroom or descaling cleaner. The soft satin polish helps here, hiding the fine scratches any working surface picks up far better than a mirror finish would. A light stone sealer every few months keeps the inlay channels from taking on colour.

## What you can change

Length is the usual request: the same design is drawn at 12 inches for a bedside tray or 20 inches for a centre table, with the inlay vine redrawn to suit rather than stretched. The border can become a plainer running vine, a heavier Mughal flower, or no inlay at all with a chamfered edge instead, and the handles can be antiqued to a darker brass. Tell us the length you need and where it will sit, and we will draw it with you and brief the sculptors and inlay artisans who make it.
