## A mandir that hangs on the wall

Rajasthani architecture has a long habit of putting devotional space into the wall rather than on the floor. The jharokha, the corbelled window bracket that projects from a haveli facade, is the direct ancestor of this piece. The niche stands 24 inches tall and reads as a small shrine front: two fluted columns carrying a cusped multifoil arch, a fluted dome and finial above, slim kalash spires at the corners. The whole assembly rests on a carved corbel bracket, so it projects from the wall on its own and needs nothing standing beneath it. The back is not a solid slab but a pierced jali panel, and that is what keeps a 24-inch shrine from crowding a small wall: daylight passes straight through the lattice and prints its pattern onto the plaster behind.

## Why Makrana holds a pierced jali

Makrana marble comes out of the Nagaur district of Rajasthan, roughly 350 km from Jaipur, and has been quarried there for centuries. It is the stone of the Taj Mahal and of most older marble work across north India. What matters for a jali is that Makrana is dense and low in porosity with a fine crystalline grain, so the thin webs between the pierced openings can be drilled and filed without crumbling at the edge. A coarser, more open stone chips at exactly those points. The surface is honed to a matte finish rather than mirror-polished, and that is a deliberate choice on this form: a high-gloss face bounces light back and flattens a lattice, while matte lets the shadow inside each opening stay legible from across a room.

## Mounting it, and what the wall has to take

The niche measures about 24 inches tall by 12 wide and weighs around 24 kg. Its depth is made to suit your wall and the murti that will sit inside, and we confirm it with you before carving begins. That is real stone on a vertical surface, so it wants solid masonry or brickwork and chemical anchors, never a drywall plug. A concealed steel plate behind the corbel is the usual arrangement, and the fixing detail goes out with the piece. The inner shelf is deep enough for a small murti, a framed image, or a pair of padukas, and the niche ships without a deity so the choice of what sits inside stays yours. Height matters more than most people expect: set the shelf so the murti's eyes fall near the standing worshipper's eye level, which in most homes puts the base of the niche 48 to 52 inches off the floor.

## Where a wall mandir earns its place

This is the format for a home with no floor to spare: a rented flat where a full floor mandir is impractical, a corridor alcove, the wall above a slim console table, a corner of a studio apartment. The familiar placement preference still holds: the north-east of the home, with the person praying facing east or north. A soft downlight fixed above the arch works better than a lamp set inside the niche, which washes out the lattice shadow the piece is designed around. One practical note: keep it off a kitchen wall where cooking oil travels, since a honed surface takes a stain more readily than a polished one.

## Make it yours

Every piece here is carved to order by the master sculptors we work with in Jaipur, so the proportions are not fixed. This niche can be scaled up or down, cut in Vietnam white marble or black stone instead, given a different jali pattern, or fitted with a concealed light channel behind the lattice. Send a photo of the wall and we will work the design around it.
