## The swing, and why the seat is empty

This jhula is sold on its own, with nothing carved into it. The cradle seat is bare, so the murti you already keep in your mandir, the one that has been bathed and dressed for years, is the one that goes into it. Most marble jhulas on the market arrive with a Bal Gopal carved permanently into the seat, which looks settled but leaves a household with a second Krishna and no way to use the swing for the first. A vacant seat solves that. It also means the jhula keeps working as the murti changes: a family that starts with a No. 0 and moves up a size later re-uses the same frame. The structure is a plain pointed arch on two turned columns, standing on a shallow footed base, with a small kalash finial at the crown.

## The material and the brass

Marble dust composite is crushed marble bound in cured resin and cast in a mould. It is the same white as quarried stone at close range, at a fraction of the weight and cost, and forgiving of the thin sections a small swing needs. It is cast at the Jaipur workshop and hand-finished after curing: sanding through progressive grits, edge micro-bevels eased by hand, then a soft satin polish that reads as a low glow rather than a mirror. The chains and the two S-hooks are brass, sourced and fitted rather than made in-house, in a light satin gold that warms the white without competing with it. Brass is the practical choice at this scale: it carries the weight of a small murti, it does not stain the seat, and it unhooks when the piece needs dusting.

## Sizing it to your Laddu Gopal

Laddu Gopal murtis are sold by number in India, and the number is the thing to check before ordering a swing. A No. 0 stands roughly two inches from base to crown; by No. 2 it is nearer three. This seat is cut for that band, with a shallow trough about three inches across, deep enough that a seated murti settles into it rather than perching on top. The piece stands nine inches tall overall and about six inches wide, so it takes up roughly a hand's span of shelf. For a No. 3 or larger, ask for the seat and frame to be scaled up rather than forcing the fit; a murti that overhangs the trough will swing unevenly on the chains.

## Where it sits through the year

A nine-inch jhula belongs on the mandir shelf itself, beside or in front of the main murti rather than above it, where a hand can reach in to rock it. It is busiest at Janmashtami, when the infant Krishna is placed in a cradle at midnight, and through Jhulan Yatra in Shravan, the Braj monsoon festival built entirely around swinging the deity. Households that do a daily seva keep the murti in the swing year-round and simply change the cloth. Dust the stone with a dry cloth and keep it clear of oil lamps, since soot settles into a satin surface faster than a polished one. Seat depth, overall height and a plain or carved arch can all be specified. Message us on WhatsApp with your murti's number.
