## The sant of Virpur, and how to tell him apart

Jalaram Bapa was born in 1799 at Virpur, in what is now Rajkot district of Gujarat, and spent his life running a sadavrat (an open kitchen that fed whoever arrived), which his family has kept going at Virpur ever since. The shrine there is known across Saurashtra as the one that takes no cash offering from a visitor. Tradition holds that a wandering sadhu left behind the jholi, the cloth alms bag, and the danda, the wooden staff; both objects are preserved at Virpur, and they became the signs by which Jalaram Bapa is recognised everywhere.

This murti carries both of them. He stands with the danda in one hand and the jholi at the shoulder, in the wound Kathiawadi turban, a long-sleeved kediyu over a white dhoti, a Vaishnav U-tilak on the forehead and a tulsi kanthi at the neck. Those details are what separate him at a glance from Sai Baba, who is shown bare-armed in a kafni with a knotted head cloth.

## What marble dust actually is

Marble dust composite is crushed marble bound in cured resin, cast to shape and then finished by hand. It is not stone lifted out of a quarry, and this page will not pretend otherwise. What it gives you at a small size is evenness: a fine, uniform white with a faint cream undertone and no vein running across the face or through the beard, which is exactly where a vein in quarried marble can spoil an eight-inch murti.

The surface is honed to a matte, so light sits broad and soft across the turban folds and the drape of the dhoti instead of flashing off them. Close up you can see the marks of a person finishing it: light sanding transitions, a small bevel along the plinth edge, a trace of asymmetry between the two hands. At arm's length it reads as solid white marble; picked up, it is lighter in the hand and warmer to the touch than quarried stone.

## An eight-inch murti, and where it goes

At 8 inches tall on a plinth of roughly 3 inches square and about 2 kg, this is a shelf piece rather than a floor piece. It suits a home mandir where a two-foot murti would crowd everything else out, an office desk, or the pooja niche of an apartment kitchen, and it is steady enough on its own base that it needs no anchoring.

Households that keep Jalaram Bapa usually place him where the day begins, beside the lamp that is lit first, at about eye level when you are seated. That compact scale is also why this size travels as a gift, particularly around Jalaram Jayanti in Kartik and for a Gujarati family setting up a new home. Nothing about the form is simplified to fit the size: the tilak, the kanthi beads, the knot of the jholi and the grain of the danda are all cut in.

## Make it yours

This murti is made to order, so it is specified with you before anything is cast. The same standing form can be built taller for a family mandir, or produced in Makrana white marble, Vietnam white marble, black stone or Dholpur pink sandstone if you would rather have quarried stone. Hand-painted detailing on the tilak, the kanthi and the turban is a common request, as is a name or a date cut into the plinth when the piece is going out as a gift. Tell us the shelf you have in mind and we will size it to that.
