## The cool white Vietnam marble

Bengal brings its goddess home once a year, and it brings her whole family with her. This 36-inch ekchala group follows that convention exactly, with Durga and her four children carved together on a single arched chali rather than as five separate murtis. The stone is Vietnam White Marble from the Thanh Hoa quarries, a bright, cool-toned white that has been a staple export stone since the 2000s and holds fine detail without the warm cream cast of Rajasthani marble. Here that neutrality earns its keep: the bare chali frame and the plinth stay clean and pale, so the painted figures in front of them read at full saturation.

## How the Durga group is carved, painted and arranged

Carving runs in stages in the Jaipur ateliers TMW works with. The block is roughed to the silhouette of the arch, then the five figures are brought forward out of the same mass, then the lion, the buffalo, the owl, the swan and the peacock are cut at the base. Faces, fingers, weapons and the folds of each sari are finished entirely by hand, and no machine pass touches them. Only once the surface is worked to a satin polish does the painting begin, layer by layer, in the daker-saaj manner Kolkata idol-makers have used for generations: gold on the ornament, deep red on the saree borders, the goddess in her golden atashi varna complexion.

The arrangement is not decorative, it is fixed. Durga holds the centre, multi-armed and crowned, her spear driven into Mahishasura while the lion pins the buffalo beneath them; Ganesha and Lakshmi take her right, Saraswati and Kartikeya her left, and each child rides a small vahana of its own: mouse, owl, swan, peacock. Bengal calls this Saparibare Durga, the goddess with her household, a regional elaboration recorded in the Chandimangal literature of the sixteenth century and rarely seen outside the east, where Durga is more often worshipped alone.

## Placing a three-foot ekchala at home

At three feet this is pandal scale rather than shelf scale. It wants a raised chowki or a masonry platform, a clear wall behind the arch, and roughly five feet of standing room in front so the whole tableau can be taken in at once. An ekchala is composed to be read across, not up. Households that keep a year-round Durga corner usually face it north or east and light it from the front so the gilding catches. Worked in marble rather than clay, it stays with the family instead of going to the river each autumn.

Sizes run from tabletop to over five feet, and the same group can be left unpainted if you prefer bare white stone. Send us your alcove or platform dimensions on WhatsApp and we will work back from there.
