## The stone

Vietnam White Marble is quarried around Thanh Hoa province in northern Vietnam and has been a steady export stone into Indian carving workshops since the 2000s. Set beside Makrana it reads noticeably cooler, a clean neutral white rather than a cream-warm one, with a fine, tightly packed crystalline grain that holds small-scale detail without crumbling at the edges. That matters enormously on a 12-inch murti, where the whole appeal sits in things measured in millimetres: the bead courses of a garland, the ridge of an eyebrow, the lip of an upturned pot. Grey veining runs light in this stone, usually under a few percent of the surface and rarely heavier than a hairline. The piece is finished to a soft satin polish, which holds a gentle sheen under a mandir lamp instead of throwing back hard highlights that flatten the carving.

## The Makhan Chor form

Makhan Chor, the butter thief, is the leela in which the infant Krishna raids Yashoda's butter stores, and it is the childhood episode most families keep on the shelf. He is shown mid-crawl on hands and knees, one hand lifted with a ball of butter, an ornate pot tipped over behind him. The peacock-feather crown, layered garlands, armlets and anklets are the standard shringar for the form. Proportion is what separates a Bal Gopal from a shrunken adult Krishna: a large head, soft rounded limbs, a short dhoti at the waist. One deliberate absence is worth naming: there is no flute. The bansuri belongs to the grown Venugopal, and putting it into an infant's hand collapses two very different murtis into one.

## Sizing it for a home mandir

At 12 inches tall and about 11 inches across the oval plinth, this Laddu Gopal sits on a mandir shelf or a wooden chowki without crowding the puja thali, the diyas and the water pot that share the space. Weight lands near 9 kg, so a shelf already carrying a brass murti will take it; a glass or engineered-wood shelf spanning more than about two feet is worth checking before it goes up. Leave a hand's width of clear space in front, because a crawling form reads best from slightly above, which is the angle you get standing at an average home mandir. Many households dress their Laddu Gopal in a fresh poshak through the year, and the crawling posture leaves the shoulders and waist open enough for cloth without burying the carving underneath.

## Making it yours

This murti is made to order, so the specification is a starting point rather than a fixed catalogue item. The same form can be scaled from a 6-inch shelf piece up to a 24-inch centrepiece, and carved in Makrana white marble, Vietnam white marble, black stone, Dholpur pink sandstone, or cast marble dust. The lotus-petal plinth can be swapped for a plain moulded base or a taller singhasan if the murti is to be dressed and seated formally. We work the design through with you, brief the sculptor who will carve it, and follow the piece all the way to your door. Message us on WhatsApp with the size and the stone you have in mind and we will come back with a quote and a timeline.
